OMG: Man Rescued Four Days After Port Harcourt Building Collapsed

by
Four days after a seven-storey building collapsed in Port Harcourt, workers clearing the rubble rescued a middle-aged man alive on Monday night.
The workers also recovered a corpse at about the same time that the survivor was removed from the wreckage.

The man, who had been trapped under the rubble since 5.30pm on Friday, was said to have been singing praises when his faint voice was heard by the workers.

It was gathered that the voice of the survivor was picked from a small opening in the rubble before the workers began to find a way to save him.

The Public Relations Officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Rivers State, Mr Akin Oguntuase, told our correspondent that the survivor would not have been saved if not for his song, which was heard by volunteers working on the site.

Oguntuase described the survivor’s escape from death as miraculous, saying, “One body and another person who was alive were brought out around 11.20pm yesterday (Monday). A cement bag was used to bring out the remains of the one who was dead.

The one we brought out alive was trapped in a hole where the building collapsed. Some eyewitnesses told us that he (survivor) was just singing and it was the song that attracted those who were clearing the rubble before he was brought out alive.”

He, however, stated that while the survivor was taken to a hospital for immediate medical attention, the remains of the dead were deposited in a morgue by some medical workers present at the scene of the accident.

Oguntuase pointed out that though conflicting figures of those rescued and the dead had been mentioned, the NSCDC recorded seven as the number of those who died, while 17 people had been rescued.

He explained that more than 17 persons had earlier escaped before the building finally caved in, adding that such persons might have been recorded as being among those who were rescued.

Key Leader Of Group That Abducted Leah Sharibu Killed – Military

by
The Nigerian Military says it has killed one of the leaders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) – the Boko Haram factional group believed to have abducted Leah Sharibu.

A statement from the Nigerian Army (NA) on Saturday revealed that the ISWAP media chief, Ahmad Sale, was neutralised in an operation by own troops in conjunction with personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.

“Reports available reveal that one Sale Ahmad Sale a. k. a. Baban Hassan, the leader of Al-Barnawi media group, a faction of Boko Haram was killed by a joint operation conducted by the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Air Force,” it said.

The Army added, “The killing of the media leader is indicative of efforts by the NA to eliminate key members of the sect.

“It is worthy to note that the sect is directly affiliated to the Islamic State and has carried out several attacks against own troops and innocent civilians in the past.”

The Army stressed that the death of the group’s media leader has shown that the leadership of the terrorist group was being targeted successfully by the military.

It assured Nigerians that other key members of the group would soon be apprehended or killed, thus decimating the terrorists and their activities in the country.

The Army disclosed further that it has identified the new leader of another terrorist group – Jama’atu Nus’ratul-Islami Wal-Muslimina, Abul-Fadl Iyad Gali.

“The group is a new terrorist group which Ansaru is affiliated to. In the same vein, the identification of the leader of Jama’atu Nus’ratul-Islami Wal-Muslimina group would enable the NA to target the group effectively using advanced technologies in its arsenal,” it said.

According to the Army, the existence of the group portends grave danger to the nation’s security.

– Leah’s Struggle –

The Boko Haram factional group had abducted Leah and over 100 students from the Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State in February this year.

Following efforts by the Federal Government for the girls to regain their freedom, the insurgents brought back the girls to the community in March after spending four weeks in captivity.

They, however, kept Leah back in captivity reportedly for refusing to renounce her faith.

She was the only Christian among the girls.

On August 27, online news platform TheCable published an audio clip in which Leah who has been in captivity for nine months now called on President Muhammadu Buhari to help her regain freedom.

In the clip, the 15-year-old who spoke in Hausa had also sought help for her family.

She said, “I am Leah Sharibu, the girl that was abducted in GGSS Dapchi. I am calling on the government, particularly, the President to pity me and get me out of this serious situation.

“I also plead to the members of the public to help my mother, my father, my younger brother and relatives. Kindly help me out of my predicament. I am calling on the government and people of goodwill to intervene to get me out of my current situation. I am begging you to treat me with compassion. Thank you.”

Leah’s stay in the terrorists’ captivity has continued to generate a widespread criticism, although the government said it was making efforts to ensure her safe return.

One of the latest came from the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) which asked President Buhari to order the security agencies to secure Leah’s release and other innocent Nigerians still held by the insurgents.

Normalcy is gradually returning to the Kaduna State capital and its environs following the relaxation of the 24-hour curfew that was imposed by the state government last week Friday.
The Curfew was relaxed in the affected areas of the state capital from 6 am to 5 pm with no incident of violence reported since it was imposed.

On Sunday, the state government adjusted the curfew, and residents are now returning to their various businesses.

Although markets, motor parks, schools, financial institutions reopened for normal activities, most traders at the various markets in the state capital did not open due to fear of the unknown.

Aernyi told newsmen that he got details of the incident on Thursday in his office in Makurdi through the Secretary, Buruku River Workers’ Union, Mr Samuel Nakombo.

He described the incident at River Buruku, where many lives and property were lost as very unfortunate and called for more proactive measures by the Federal Government.

The special adviser said a boat conveying more than 20 passengers and carrying some Bajaj motorcycles was sailing on Wednesday evening when the ugly incident occurred.

He said that more than 20 passengers were still missing while about 17 Bajaj motorcycles were yet to be recovered.

He recalled that in December 2013, a similar incident had claimed many lives.

PBS Newshour Sued You Can't Fire Me For Admiring Meghan Markle!!!

by
Meghan Markle's drop-dead-gorgeous looks are having unintended consequences for a writer, who claims PBS NewsHour canned him due to a comment he made about the Duchess' looks.
Hugh Heckman, an award-winning newswriter, is suing over his firing. In docs, obtained by TMZ, he says on November 25, 2017, a female coworker sitting 20 feet from his desk complained to her boss after hearing him say "not bad" in reference to a photo of Meghan they were using for a story.

He says another female employee overheard and chimed in, "Haven't you learned?"

Heckman says he was embarrassed because he didn't mean it in a sexual way, and only wanted to convey he thought Meghan "possessed charm and beauty and was a suitable match for her fiance."

He says 2 days later he was fired. In the suit, Heckman says he heard the same 2 female coworkers once call Justin Trudeau "hot," but they were not fired. He's pissed about what he calls an obvious double standard at PBS NewsHour.

Heckman is suing for wrongful termination based on gender. We've reached out to PBS NewsHour ... so far no word back.

Federal Government To Pay Workers Salaries Despite Strike Action – AGFFederal Government To Pay Workers Salaries Despite Strike Action – AGF

by
Despite the commencement of the indefinite strike action embarked on by the Organised labour, the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris has restated his commitment to pay salaries of all workers on the Federal Government payroll in spite of the on-going Labour strike.
The AGF gave this commitment today while speaking to Newsmen at the Treasury House in Abuja.

“We have a standing order from Mr. President to pay workers salaries from the 25th of every month, which we have striven hard to fulfill to Nigerian workers and this month will not be an exception” said the AGF.

Ahmed however said that the payment of salaries cannot be achieved in an atmosphere where the critical stakeholders are not allowed access to their offices. “I must explain that salary payment involves a number of processes that do not begin and end with the OAGF.

There are other critical stakeholders like the Cash Management Department in Ministry of Finance and others who are supposed to do their beat before we can finalise”, Mr Idris said.

“On coming to the office this morning we met the gates of the office locked and wondered how we can keep this promise if we are being locked out of the office. After speaking with the local arm of the Labour in the office on the need to pay salaries, they conceded to allow me and some of my staff in but the Gates are still locked. I therefore appeal to labour to open our gates so that we can have unhindered access to meet their needs”.

The AGF further appealed to the National Leadership of Labour to reconsider their stand on the on-going strike saying that the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari more than ever has demonstrated high commitment towards meeting the welfare of the Nigerian Workers.

He therefore enumerated some of the very salient actions the present Government has so far undertaken to improve the welfare of the workers to include:-

i. the payment of over N50 billion for Promotion arrears from 2012 – 2016;

ii. the approval of another N60 Biilion for the payment of Salary Arrears with effect from 2011 -2016;

iii. the President’s recent approval of N22.68 Billion for the payment of pension Arrears to the retirees of the defunct Nigeria Airways workers which has been outstanding for over 14 years;

iv. the President’s approval of N20 billion to meet ASSU’s demand for infrastructure development in both Federal and State Universities;

v. the Federal Government policy of Non-retrenchment of workers ;

vi. Provision of jobs for the teaming Nigerian unemployed youths, especially: the recruitment of over 10,000 Policemen; recruitment by the Army, Navy and Air force; recruitment by the para-military such as the Fire Service, Immigration, Nigeria Prison Service , Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps;

vii. Appointment into Various Ministries, Departments and Agencies;

viii. the payment of salaries to Federal Government Workers as at when due, as well as promotion of workers as at when due.

14 Feared Killed In Fresh Plateau Attack

by
Fourteen people have been reported killed in a fresh attack in Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Thursday night when Gunmen attacked Rukuba – a resident of the community told Channels Television.

According to the witness, the 14 people comprised of one child, five men and eight women.

Residents claimed that efforts were made to reach security officials when the attack was going on but the officials failed to respond until Friday morning.

In the early hours of Friday, youths of the community took to the streets, protesting against the late response of the military.

They mounted barricades preventing motorists and passers-by from accessing the road, but troops of the Operation Safe Haven moved into the area and cleared the barricade.

The tension has, however, spread to Gada Biu, Katako, Farin Gada and the Jos main market as traders and shop owners have closed to avoid any vandalism by hoodlums.

‘I Was Called Baba Go Slow’: Buhari Blasts Elites For Nigeria’s Challenges

by
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday blasted elites who he said were silent and allowed the mismanagement of Nigeria.
He said this during a meeting with the Nigerian community in the United States of America on the margins of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The President who hailed ‘ordinary Nigerians’ who stood by him blamed the elite that allowed Nigeria to be mismanaged for 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration without as much as raising a voice in consternation.

“They didn’t say a word.

“Under the PTF (Petroleum Trust Fund, of which he was Chairman), we did roads from Lagos to Abuja, to Onitsha, to Port Harcourt. Since then, the roads were not done, between 1999 and 2015, yet the elite did not say a word,” Buhari noted in a statement signed on Friday by his special adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.

The President also took a swipe at those who referred to him as ‘Baba Go Slow.’

He further blamed elites who he said had remained silent since 1983 when corrupt politicians that were jailed by his administration were later set free after he was put in detention.

“I was called Baba Go Slow. Those who were going fast, where did they get to?
“In 1983, military officers gathered and made me Head of State. I packed the politicians into jail, told them they were guilty until they could prove their innocence.
“We seized what they had looted, but after I myself was put in detention, the politicians were given back what they had looted. How many elites complained about that?
“Three times I contested elections; three times I went to court after the elections were rigged against me. No justice, but I said ‘God dey.’
President Buhari then hailed people he described as ‘ordinary Nigerians’ who voted him into power and stood by him.

“It was mainly the ordinary people that stood by me. That is why I am always conscious of them. They are my constituency.

“Even pregnant women on the queue would fall into labour, go to have their babies, and still come back to vote for me. I will keep doing my best for the country.”

Buhari also promised that if he wins the 2019 election, and he spent another four years in office, “I will leave some difference in that office.”

The diaspora Nigerians who were in the interactive meeting with the President include top-flight professionals drawn from fields like medicine, engineering, sports, the arts, investment, academia, politics, agriculture, transport, education, publishing, and many others.

He told them that, “You are contributing to this great country (America). If you want to help back home, invest in education in your constituencies. If you educate people, they won’t then accept nonsense from anybody.”

President Buhari said the administration has kept faith with its three key campaign promises; to secure the country, revive the economy and fight corruption.

“I’ve tried to do my best since I came.
“Security-wise, we are better. Boko Haram still conducts cowardly attacks, but the insurgency is not the same as it used to be. They are terrorists and have nothing to do with religion,” he said.

The President concluded that his administration will continue to deal with terrorists and war against the insurgency.

Why Eminem’s “Kamikaze” Is One Giant Diss Track

by
Eminem, one of the best rappers in history (and this is not just a fan’s wishful thinking but a consensus among the greatest rappers in the world) has released a brand new album called “Kamikaze“.
This is the tenth studio album released by the rapper, launched as a surprise on August 31.

The album topped the charts in many countries (it didn’t even make it to the top 50 in Nigeria, though) from Australia to the United States but it has also generated a lot of criticism and controversy… because at times, it feels like one giant diss track.

Diss tracks have been exchanged by rappers for ages – these tracks are forms of public criticism used by many rappers to fuel their feuds with their “rivals” in the scene. With his new album, Eminem has dissed out a series of rappers but he didn’t stop there – he has a few select words for politicians, too.

Rappers dissed by Eminem

In “The Ringer”, Eminem has a few words for Vince Staples, who called his famous BET Awards freestyle “trash”, Joe Budden, who called his track featuring Beyoncé “trash”, Lil Yachty, calling him “not for me”, Lil Pump and Lil Xan for imitating Lil Wayne.

In “Greatest”, Eminem disses Ja Rule (as part of a decade-and-a-half-long feud), Token, who he called unworthy of a response.

In “Lucky You” and “Not Alike”, he disses mumble rappers in general, calling their work “songs about nothin’”, pointing out Migos, he gives Machine Gun Kelly a big dose of dissing, criticising him, among others, for “sneak-dissing” and using sublime messages.

In “Kamikaze”, he disses his fellow white rappers and Drake, in “Fall”, he has a few words for Charlamagne Tha God, Joe Budden, DJ Akademiks, Tyler, The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and the list could go on and on and on.

Non-rappers dissed by Eminem
This new album is not only about dissing fellow rappers. Some of the messages included on Eminem’s new album are pointed at politicians and the music industry as a whole.

In “The Ringer”, Em points a finger at the President of the United States of America, reminding him that his freestyle at last year’s BET awards at least made him – and his “sidekick” Mike Pence nervous enough for “Agent Orange” to send the Secret Service to visit the rapper.

In “Fall”, Em points a finger on Pitchfork for giving his album “Revival” five points out of ten, and the Grammy Awards for “sucking the blood” of the music industry, nominating popular artists to various awards and giving them to others instead.

Benue PDP Taunts Akume, Says He’s Desperate,

by
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Benue State has described perceived attacks by Senator George Akume on Governor Samuel Ortom as unfortunate and fall short of the standard of conduct expected of a former governor.
Akume, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress, APC, at a briefing in Abuja alleged that “Benue State is under siege by the PDP government.”

Reacting, State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, said: “It is the same attitude Senator Akume maintains towards the person and office of the governor of the state, whom he has variously insulted in public as ‘something he picked from the gutter’.

Akume’s conduct towards the person and office of the governor of Benue State falls short of the civility, maturity and decorum required of his status as a former occupant of that same office, and such should be condemned in the strongest possible terms by all.

“He has resorted to an obviously desperate brand of politics, one which has become quite acute lately, following the departure of Governor Ortom from the Senator’s political stable.

“The bottom line to this is that Senator Akume has chosen to place his quest for continued political relevance above the Benue project, which is what represents the collective idea of our being as a people bound by a common identity, heritage and interests.

“The people are ever mindful of this, and it will be their duty to ensure that the Benue North-West Senator and his Abuja masters and their political interests are rejected at the polls in 2019.

Currently, about 1,200 persons are being accommodated in the camp after their homes were submerged and their farmlands destroyed, as water from the Shiroro and Zungeru dams overflowed.

As the government tries to manage the situation, the Air Force says the outreach is expected to complement its efforts, as well as help to reduce the risks of an outbreak of diseases.

Health workers in the camp say malaria, cholera and diarrhoea are major ailments already being presented by the IDPs.

At Least 40 Killed

So far, at least 40 people have been killed with over 100 homes submerged by the flood.

The state governor, Abubakar Bello, says the situation is beyond the state’s control and has, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government to intervene.

With the increase in rainfall and flooding across several states, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to declare it a national disaster.

Subsequently, the agency made the declaration in four states and placed eight others on the watch list.

The four states are Kogi, Niger, Delta and Anambra.

Prior to that development, NEMA’s Director-General, Mustapha Maihaja, had inaugurated five Emergency Operation Centres (EOC) to facilitate prompt search and rescue operations as well as humanitarian support in the 12 worst-hit states.

The Emergency Response Centres will be responsible for planning, organising, directing and supervising deployment of resources with the affected state governments and local authorities and communities.

The primary objective is to localize the responses and expedite intervention to save lives and facilitate quick recoveryr

Diddy Responds Privately To Joe Budden About Eminem's "Killshot" Accusation

by
The feud between Eminem and Machine Gun Kelly may be the hottest thing in the hip-hop world right now but a sub-story from that has been the revisitation of Joe Budden's malice towards Eminem.
The two have not gotten along for years and Budden continues to comment on Shady's activity on his podcast.

He may attempt to be an unbiased man but when it comes to heated situations like these, his true feelings shine through. At the end of "Killshot," Em makes a claim that the day MGK puts out a hit will be the same day Diddy admits he put a hit out on Tupac's life.

Obviously, Diddy has not publicly commented on that exact matter but he did hop on the phone with Joe Budden to tell him everything was in control

What he means by that can be interpreted a million different ways but on his latest podcast, Budden said that Puffy told him privately that "it's in his hands.

" The line in question was pretty bold and was bound to include some repercussions. You can't just accuse somebody of putting a hit on a man and expect nothing in return

Whatever Diddy has planned should be interesting to keep an eye on.

Check out the video below where Budden reveals the news and mocks Bizarre for his involvement in the feud.

Soldiers Drain Jos Pond In Search Of Missing Maj. General Alkali

by
Nigerian troops rallied to flush out Boko Haram rag tag forces in Guzamala
Some Nigerian soldiers are draining a mining pond at Dura, Du District, Jos South Local Government of Plateau, in search of Idris Alkali, a missing retired Major General.

Alkali, former Chief of Administration, Army Headquarters, Abuja, was declared missing on the 3rd of September.

Recruits undergo training at the headquaters of the Depot of the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State in northcentral Nigeria, on October 5, 2017.

He was on his way to Bauchi after leaving Abuja in the morning.

Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohammed, Garrison Commander, 3 Division Garrison, Nigeria Army, Rukuba, Jos addressed newsmen on Thursday, shortly after the commencement of the evacuation.

Mohammed, who is the commander of the search and rescue operation, said that after thorough search and investigation, the army stumbled on some intelligence that made it necessary to search the water body.

“In carrying out a directive from the Army headquarters, a thorough search was conducted, hospitals were visited, we searched everywhere.

“Based on credible intelligence, we had to come to this place and we have been here for the last one week.

“We are trying to find three things – an officer, Maj. Gen. Alkali (rtd), who is still missing, his vehicle, a black Toyota Corolla, and also ascertain whether Alkali is alive or not.

“We have credible information that some vehicles were pushed into this river and we have been here for the last three days trying to see if we can salvage something from the river.

“The river is a mining site and therefore very deep. We have used all options but as a last resort, we will evacuate the water from the pond to see what is in it,” he said.

Meanwhile, some 500 women clad in black, protested the evacuation of the water.

Mrs. Mary Yakubu, leader of the protesters, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the water had been part of the community over time, adding that it had “a huge cultural significance”.

“If the water is evacuated, it could lead to the death of our sons and husbands,” she claimed.

But Gen. Mohammed, in a reaction, said that nothing would stop the army from evacuating the water.

“The only thing that can stop us is a directive from the Army Headquarters,” he declared.

Drake And Meek Mill Beef Settled At Drake's Show!!!

by
8:17 PM PT -- Drake just brought Meek out and as expected, the crowd went insane. Beef officially squashed
It might seem like a long, long time ago when there was no greater beef in the hip hop world than Drake vs. Meek Mill, but tonight that's all officially ancient history ... TMZ has learned.

Sources close to Meek tell us ... the rapper will join Drake on stage during his show at Boston's TD Garden Saturday night. Drake is currently touring with Migos, and we're told Meek's set to go on in a matter of minutes.

As you'll recall ... the 2 rappers went at it in 2015 after Meek criticized Drizzy and accused him of using ghostwriters. Drake responded with a couple diss tracks, including the huge hit "Back to Back."

Since then, Meek's gone to prison and been released, and publicly stated his beef with Drake was over in May because Drake supported his release. Still, the 2 haven't got together to officially squash it ... 'til now.

BTW, Meek's friend and Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin -- who played a big part in helping him get released from prison -- is stoked about the rappers performing together too ... and shared this pic of Meek's wrist with his credentials.

Drake, Kanye West Is Welcome At My Show ... Beef Squashed

by
Drake's been taking some not-so-subtle jabs at Kanye West recently -- but if Ye follows through on his word to see a Drake show -- Drizzy won't turn him away.
Kanye went on Twitter earlier this week to apologize to Drake for leaving him off "Lift Yourself" ... adamantly denying he spilled the beans about Drake's secret son to Pusha T. Kanye's olive branch -- a promise to attend a Drake concert. Ye praised Drake, saying, "the images (from the show) look incredible online."

Our sources say Drake won't stop Kanye from attending and has made it clear to security ... Ye is not to be banned.

Our sources say Kanye hasn't reached out for tix -- and there's a very good chance he'll just buy his own -- but you gotta imagine, it'll be no secret if Ye is in the building.

As for the fans ... don't bank on any onstage Yeezy guest spots during the show.

Japan Hails Naomi Osaka’s Performance At US Open

by
Japan on Sunday hailed Naomi Osaka’s stunning upset against the legendary Serena Williams to win the US Open, giving the nation some rare good news after a summer of deadly natural disasters.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe led the praise, taking to Twitter to congratulate Osaka after her 6-2, 6-4 win in New York.

“Congratulations on your victory at the US Open. The first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam title. Thank you for giving energy and inspiration to the whole of Japan,” the premier tweeted.

Abe was on his way to the northern island of Hokkaido where a massive earthquake last week sparked landslides that buried houses in a rural town, killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds of others.

Osaka’s grandfather Tetsuo Osaka, 73, lives in Hokkaido and said he wept watching his granddaughter on television.

“It still hasn’t sunk in for me yet. The moment she won, my wife and I rejoiced together. I was so happy, I cried,” he told public broadcaster NHK.

“I hope she stays healthy and continues her good work. I also hope she wins at the Tokyo Olympics (in 2020),” he said.

Fellow tennis star Kei Nishikori flooded Twitter with emojis of trophies, thumbs up and Japanese flags, followed by a simple tweet of “proud” alongside a Japanese flag.

And Tsuyoshi Fukui, a former top Japanese player and now a senior official at the Japanese Tennis Association, said Osaka’s performance would help to cheer the country up after typhoons, floods and earthquakes dominated the headlines this summer.

Osaka’s “tenacious and patient performance … must have been a great show of encouragement to those Japanese people who saw damage from such things as typhoons and earthquakes,” Fukui told Japanese media.

Meanwhile, NHK took a break from its round-the-clock coverage of the disaster to turn to happier news.

“Osaka wins women’s US Open, becomes first Japanese to win Grand Slam,” blared the broadcaster’s top headline.

Sports Nippon newspaper said Osaka had achieved a “complete victory” against an “irritated Serena who broke her racket”.

The Asahi Shimbun daily said on Twitter it would be printing an extra edition and distributing it in Tokyo.

– ‘Pride of Japan’ –

The final will probably be remembered for a meltdown from Williams who called the chair umpire a “thief” as much as for the 20-year-old’s historic win.

Williams’s tantrum overshadowed an outstanding performance from Osaka, who made her second career title a Grand Slam after winning her first at Indian Wells in March.

Osaka has dual Japanese-American citizenship and often replies to questions from Japan’s media in English, apologising for not knowing the appropriate word when she speaks Japanese.

After earning $3.8 million (3.29 million Euros) for the victory, Osaka said her next goal was a simple one: to win her next tournament in Tokyo.

Asked if she was prepared for the reception she’ll receive as the country’s first Grand Slam winner, Osaka said: “Apparently not, because people keep asking me that.”

Japan remains a fairly homogenous country and mixed-race children — especially those with black heritage — can often face prejudice, although attitudes among younger generations are changing.

And Japanese fans on social media were happy to claim her as one of their own on the day of her greatest triumph.

“Her interview showed that she is clearly Japanese — regardless of where she was born, where she grew up, the colour of her skin and the language that she speaks,” said one fan on Twitter.
“You are the pride of Japan.”

‘Enough Is Enough,’ Army Vows To Stop Killings In Plateau

by
The Nigerian Army has promised to clampdown on armed bandits terrorising residents of Plateau State and stop the incessant killings in state.
The Commander Of Operation Safe Haven, Major General Augustine Agundu disclosed this on Saturday while reacting to the murder of three soldiers working with the Special Task Force, Operation Safe Haven.

He described the recent killings in the state as precarious and an act of lawlessness. He vowed that the troops is set to deal with the situation decisively.

“The peace on the Plateau has been disrupted to a situation that is no longer acceptable. I lost some men yesterday because certain persons have decided to take laws into their hands.

“I have declared enough is enough. What happened in Barkin Ladi will never repeat itself again. I’ve locked down Barkin Ladi completely and no human being is going to cause further havoc in that local government.

“Whatever is going on in Barkin Ladi local government, Riyom Local Government, Bassa Local Government, Bokkos Local Government, that is enough. My troops are resolved to bring the situation decisively under control.”

Agundu disclosed further that the three soldiers were killed in action by some attackers who are yet to known. He also lamented over the proliferation of arms in the Plateau.

He urged leaders of Plateau communities to get their youths to decorum so that residents of the communities can go about their business peacefully and without fear.

‘This Is The Worst Government Since 1999 – Atiku

by
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and PDP presidential hopeful, has described the Buhari-led government as the worst government Nigeria has had since 1999.
Atiku who submitted his presidential nomination form last Thursday and hopes to be the PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 election, berated the government of the day when he paid a courtesy visit to Ahmed Makarfi, former caretaker committee chairman of the party who is also a presidential aspirant of the PDP.
“You can definitely acknowledge that since the return of democracy, we have not had a worst period than now, whether in terms of economy, whether in terms of unity, whether in terms of security, this is the worst time since 1999. The maladministration of the APC government is very evident, we have the highest record of unemployment since 1999, we have the highest inflation, we have multiple exchange rates that discourage foreign investment. We have the highest level of insecurity since 1999.

“People are more angry, people are poorer more than at anytime. Nigeria is rated as the headquarters of poverty in the world. This is unthinkable for a country that is endowed with human and natural resources like ours, just because of lack of clear headed leadership and direction, this is where we find ourselves. So, it is obvious that we just have to change the leadership of this country.” he said.

Benue PDP Hand Over Party Structures To Gov. Ortom

by
The structures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue were on Monday handed over to Gov. Samuel Ortom.
Former President of the Senate David Mark handed over the structures at the party’s stakeholders meeting in Makurdi.

Mark further said that the stakeholders meeting was the first of the harmonised PDP since Ortom came back to the party.

He said that with the calibre of the people that had come back to PDP’s fold, it could win any election in the country.

He said that both the old and new members of the party had equal rights in the party, stressing that it was on that basis that the party’s executive positions had to be reviewed so as to accommodate the people that just defected to it.

”As they joined us we need to give them some positions thereby giving them a sense of belonging. ”We have constituted an Integration Committee which will work 24/7 to ensure proper harmonisation right from the council ward upwards,” he said.

Also, Ortom promised that all the political leaders of the party in the state would continue to work together and it would be sustained.

The governor said that in politics there was neither permanent enemy nor friend but what was permanent was interest.

”Our coming together was for the interest of the state and that was what brought them together,” he said.

He commended the party’s leadership for agreeing to review the party’s structure in order to accommodate the people that defected with him to PDP.

He said that other governorship aspirants of the party should not be worried because even as a leader of the party now he could not compromise the rules and constitution of the party.

”There will be a level playing field for all the aspirants,” he said.

Former governor of the state, Mr Gabriel Suswam, informed the people that the officers whose offices were affected by the review would be given immediate appointment by the state government.

Suswam said that the decision was arrived at for the best interest of the state, stressing that the party was considering the future; and all affected should accept the decision in good faith.

Earlier, the state Chairman, Mr John Ngbede, warned local government chairmen against preventing people from joining the party at the local government level.

”You do not have the right to deny anybody membership card of the party,” he said.

He expressed optimism that Ortom would move the party to lofty heights now that he assumed leadership of the party.

What Is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Net Worth And How Much Does The Juventus Star Earn?

by
The Portugal captain joined Italian champions, Juventus in the just concluded transfer window and it is no secret that he is earning three times more than anyone else in Serie A.
Here is a post that is going to give you Cristiano Ronaldo’s net worth and how much he earns in Juventus.

What is Cristiano Ronaldo Salary at Juventus?

Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest-paid player in Serie A and earns three times more than anyone else in Italy’s top-flight, according to a report published by Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Portuguese star has been the big talking point in Italy since his €100m (£88m/$117m) move to the Bianconeri in the summer.

Ronaldo is earning an incredible €31 million (£28m/$36m) per season in Turin and is on a four-year deal with the reigning Serie A champions.

Not only is the five-time Ballon d’Or and Champions League winner by far the biggest earner in the league, but he earns more than three times as much as anyone else.

Gonzalo Higuain, who joined AC Milan from Juve after Ronaldo arrived in Turin, is the next best paid, raking in €9.5 million (£9m/$11m) per season.

What is Cristiano Ronaldo Net Worth?

No one can really claim to have a bulletproof idea of what Ronaldo is worth except his management company, but most sources estimate the figure to be between £200m and £250m.

According to Forbes, Ronaldo is the third highest earning athlete this 2018, with his earnings at $108M. He also ranked 10th in the Forbes list of top 100 highest earning celebrities.

What charity work does Cristiano Ronaldo do?

It would be unfair to say Ronaldo does not strive to put some of his fortune towards the greater good – in fact, in 2015 he was recognised by Dosomething.org as the most charitable sports star in the world.

The website acclaimed Ronaldo for using his fame to promote “a variety of causes including childhood hunger, obesity and biodiversity” and highlighted an $83,000 donation to a 10-year-old fan in need of brain surgery as well as a $165,000 contribution to a cancer centre in Portugal that treated his mother.

After the 2016 Champions League final, it was reported that the ex-Manchester United man instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to donate his €600,000 win bonus to a non-governmental organisation. Ronaldo has supported the likes of UNICEF, World Vision and Save the Children in the past.

2019: APC Adopts Direct Primary For Presidency, Indirect For Others

by
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted direct primary election to select its candidate for the presidential election in 2019.
Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State disclosed this to reporters on Thursday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The APC adopted the process during its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held the party’s national secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory.

L-R: Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; President Muhammadu Buhari; and All Progressives Congress National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole

Governor Lalong also revealed that the party adopted indirect primaries for members contesting for other elective positions in the forthcoming elections.

However, he said states willing to hold indirect primaries depending on their peculiarities were asked to inform the National Working Committee NWC of the APC.

According to him, this will be subject to meeting certain conditions, including a resolution signed by the majority in the state supporting direct primaries.

The decisions followed the disagreement among some members of the party over the process of selecting a candidate to fly the party’s flag in an election.

This was one of the factors that led to the disruption of the first party’s primary in the build-up to the governorship election in Ekiti State in July.

Some members who defected from the party in Osun had attributed their exit to the process by the APC selected its candidates for the September 22 governorship election in the state.

Ahead of the general elections, the APC leadership promised to continue with efforts aimed at reconciling members with genuine grievances.

Earlier at today’s NEC meeting, President Muhammadu Buhari asked the APC leaders in attendance to ensure that the decisions reached at the meeting were in the interest of the party.

He also urged the party’s leadership to comply with the Electoral Act and the APC’s Constitution while conducting primaries for the general elections.

The President stressed the need for free, fair and credible primaries, noting that the wave of defection in the party recently was not enough to upset the APC.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and APC national leader, Bola Tinubu, as well as governors and other party chieftains, attended the meeting.

Coca-Cola To Buy Coffee Chain Costa For £3.9bn

by
Coca-Cola is to buy Costa coffee from leisure group Whitbread in a deal that values the UK high-street chain at £3.9bn including debt.

James Quincey, Coca-Cola president and chief executive said that Costa would give the company, “new capabilities and expertise in coffee and our system can create opportunities to grow the Costa brand worldwide”.

“Hot beverages is one of the few remaining segments of the total beverage landscape where Coca-Cola does not have a global brand. Costa gives us access to this market through a strong coffee platform.”

Whitbread had previously announced it would spin off Costa from the rest of its business, which is focused on the faster-growing Premier Inn hotel brand, after coming under pressure from activist investors.

A “significant majority” of the net cash proceeds of around £3.8bn from the deal will be returned to shareholders, Whitbread said.

Detroit Tribute Concert Celebrates Aretha Franklin

by
A spectacular concert celebrating the life and extraordinary career of Aretha Franklin brought thousands of joyful fans to their feet in Detroit Thursday, honouring the “Queen of Soul” on the eve of her funeral.

More than 40 artists took to the stage at what was billed “A People’s Tribute to the Queen,” powering through some of her greatest hits two weeks after her death in her Michigan hometown.

The US music icon, beloved by millions around the world, died of cancer on August 16, closing the curtain on a glittering six-decade career that made her one of America’s most celebrated artists.

The concert spanned the R&B, Gospel, Jazz and Blues, even classical genres in which Franklin excelled. Her grandchildren spoke briefly, delivering heartfelt thanks on behalf of their family and grandmother.

She influenced generations of female singers from the late Whitney Houston to Beyonce, with unforgettable hits including “Respect” (1967), “Natural Woman” (1968) and “I Say a Little Prayer” (1968).

“The concert is wonderful. I mean for people that couldn’t be here you just don’t know what you’re missing,” said Tembley Reynolds, 60, a medical records clerk from Saginaw, Michigan. “Everyone was great!”

Free tickets were snapped up within minutes of being made available online at the 5,000-seat, waterfront outdoor Chene Park Amphitheatre, where Franklin herself had performed. ‘Fit for a queen’

Dancing, excitedly taking selfies and filming parts of the concert on their cell phones, the evening was a chance for Detroit to celebrate the life and legacy of a towering figure regarded as local royalty.

Performances included Franklin’s hits “Freeway of Love” — an anthem to the Motor City — and “Say A Little Prayer,” with an all-cast rendition of “Respect” scheduled to bring the house down in the finale.

Her signature song, the feminist anthem became a rallying cry as African-Americans rose up nationwide in the 1960s to fight peacefully for racial equality.

Headliners included The Four Tops, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Angie Stone, while a gospel choir took everyone to church, rousing the crowd to their feet with an electric, upbeat performance of classics and a powerful rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Tasha Page-Lockhart.

Tenor Rod Dixon even sang “Nessun Dorma” in a tribute to Franklin’s last-minute performance of the Puccini aria when Luciano Pavarotti called in sick at the last minute at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

The concert followed three days of public viewings of her open, golden casket that drew thousands — at her father’s New Bethel Baptist Church, and the Charles H. Wright Museum for African-American History.

On Thursday, she lay resplendent in the church dressed in a rose gold outfit and matching Christian Louboutin stilettos. On Tuesday, she wore a red dress with matching heels and on Wednesday she was in blue.
‘Truly missed’

“I wanted to come here in the jubilance, the joyousness, the celebration of Aretha and her legacy,” said Dorlena Orange, 68. “We’re like a party. It’s like a beautiful, wonderful thing.”

The New Bethel Baptist Church held a special place in Franklin’s heart. It was there that she hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for parishioners and the needy, and also recorded an album.

On Friday, former president Bill Clinton and Smokey Robinson are among those due to address her six-hour, invitation-only funeral with musical tributes coming from Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande.

“I think it’s going to be a very upbeat service. I think it’s going to be a very jubilant service,” said Bishop Charles Ellis, pastor at the Greater Grace Temple where the funeral is being held.

Franklin won 18 Grammy awards and was feted for her civil rights work, raising money for the cause and uplifting activists with her anthems.

The daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher and civil rights activist, Franklin sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the inaugurations of presidents Clinton and Barack Obama.

She was awarded America’s highest civilian honour by George W. Bush in 2005. Letters from Bush and Obama are expected to be read at the funeral.
