Ghanaian traditional leader threatens to ban spiritual gatherings over false prophecies

by
Naba Asigri Abugragoe Azoka II, Paramount Chief of the Bawku traditional area in Ghana, has threatened to ban spiritual gatherings over the increasing numbers of people posing as men of God and misleading the public with false prophecies.
In a statement, he issued to all the Churches in the Bawku area last weekend, he said false prophecies were generating problems, with some family members being accused of witchcraft and causing harm to their family.
'These pastors come to form churches in this area and engage the community members in prayers and what they call deliverance services, then they prophesise about their lives and end up labeling some family members of their church members wizards or witches', he said.

The chief in his statement also threatened to ban spiritual gatherings, if Pastors keep engaging in false prophecies.

4 Dead, 2 Injured After Plane Hits Houses In California

by
Four people died and two were injured when a small plane carrying a family returning from a cheerleading competition crashed into two Southern California homes and sparked a major fire Monday, authorities said.
A husband, wife and three teenagers were on the plane that had just taken off from Riverside Municipal Airport at 4:40 p.m. intending to return to San Jose after the weekend cheerleading event at Disneyland when it crashed in the residential neighborhood, Riverside Fire Chief Michael Moore said.

One of the teenagers, a girl, was thrown from the plane on impact but had only minor injuries, Moore said. Three witnesses told TV stations she crawled from the home asking for help.

She was able to talk to firefighters about what had happened as she was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, Moore said.

Firefighters entered one of the burning houses and pulled out an unconscious resident. That victim is in surgery at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in San Bernardino, Moore said.

Four bodies were found in the combined wreckage of the plane and the homes, but firefighters have not sorted out exactly how many were passengers and how many were residents. They are looking for additional possible victims in the wreckage.

The two homes that were hit directly were destroyed, and there was minor damage to some neighboring houses, Moore said.

The plane was broken into hundreds of pieces, its propeller sitting on the roof of a nearby home, and the fire burning with jet fuel was still ablaze several hours after the crash.

H.L. Reyes, who lives about a quarter-mile from the crash site, told The Associated Press she felt the ground shake and saw plumes of black smoke.

"I thought it was a possible earthquake, and we heard all the birds just suddenly react outside, too," Reyes said. "This was just like a nightmare coming true."

Shannon Flores, a teacher at an elementary school about three blocks away, said she saw the plane out her classroom window. She said it was raining during the crash, though other witnesses said the rain was very light.
"As soon as we saw it fly over, we knew it wasn't a good thing," Flores told KABC-TV. "We watched it go down very quickly ... Before we knew it, there was a loud crash and huge plumes of smoke."

We Killed 18 B’Haram Fighters Searching For Food – Army

by
No fewer than 18 Boko Haram terrorists have been killed by the troops of the Nigerian Army when the insurgents invaded Kumuya village in the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Our correspondent exclusively learnt that some Boko Haram members had attacked the village to cart away food, but a gun battle subsequently ensued between them and the troops, leading to the death of 18 casualties.

A top source at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, who confirmed the incident, said a community leader alerted the army when the terrorists swooped on the community.

Our correspondent could not ascertain whether any soldier was injured or killed during the clash, which occurred on Friday.

The source said, “There was a call from the community that the terrorists were around the area to unleash mayhem, including ransacking people’s houses for food. The information was so accurate because when the troops got to the location, the Boko Haram members were taken out. Eighteen of them were killed.
“The Boko Haram members are hungry and they are coming to some remote villages to attack residents and to look for food. But this time in Kumuya village, luck ran out on them and they were killed by the troops.”
The Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, also confirmed the casualties.

He maintained that the Boko Haram sect had been dislodged, but a fraction of it was still desperate to remain relevant.
He said, “The killing of the Boko Haram insurgents in Kumuya is true. We want people to always give the military timely and accurate information so that we can continue to maintain peace and security.
“All efforts are now geared towards reconstruction, resettlement and rehabilitation of the communities displaced by the sect.”

by
The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, has vowed that he will not collect any salary until all the workers in the state’s civil service are paid their salaries.
He appealed to the doctors and nurses who are currently on strike to end their industrial action and embrace dialogue with his government.

Akeredolu stated this in Akure, the Ondo State capital, while formally meeting with the workers in the state civil service, on Monday.

In his maiden address to the workers, the governor said all the issues relating to the payment of their salaries would top the agenda of his administration.

He disclosed that a committee would be set up by the government to address how the backlog of salaries would be paid and how to move the state forward.
He said, “I am aware of your pains and agony. I feel your pains and what you are going through, and I can see your sufferings. I am surprised that you are still able to put up these smiles without seven months’ salaries. No doubt, a labourer deserves his wages.
“A committee will soon be set up to address this salary issue. We are set to move forward and at the end of the day, we will all win. Let us join hands to work together for the development of this state and I can assure you that with God on our side, we shall scale all obstacles to make Ondo great.”

Govt Empowers 3,000 Widows, Senior Citizens, Others

by
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Idiat Adebule, has said improving the economic opportunities of women is the major key to poverty reduction and economic growth.

She said this on Monday during an empowerment programme organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for over 3,000 widows, vulnerable women, senior citizens and graduates of the skill acquisition centres of the state government.

According to Adebule, the state government had recently presented N1bn to 785 beneficiaries and had been engaging local contractors in the implementation of projects to improve the standard of living of residents.
“This programme is meant to take care of the needs of women in all the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas of the state. It involves the distribution of materials such as grinding and sewing machines and hair dressing tools, as well as financial support for senior citizens and widows.
“This underscores the reason this administration has taken women empowerment as one of its focal policies to mitigate the effects of the global economic recession being experienced by many Lagosians, especially women. This will make them self-reliant, as well as support the family income,’’ she said.

In her address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande, said studies had shown that many women had become breadwinners of their families or supporters of their husbands to sustain their families.

Arms Scam: Obanikoro’s Wife Loses Abuja Mansion To FG, Appeals

by
A Federal Capital Territory High Court, sitting in Jabi, Abuja, has ordered that Alhaja Moroophat Obanikoro, the wife of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, should forfeit her property pending the outcome of investigations into her husband and children.

The court also rejected a prayer asking the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to pay her the sum of N200m for violating her fundamental human rights.

Obanikoro’s wife has, however, headed for the Appeal Court to challenge the court judgment.

As part of investigations into the $2.1bn arms scam, involving the Office of the National Security Adviser, the EFCC had traced the transfer of about N4.7bn to the Diamond Bank account of Sylvan McNamara, a company allegedly owned by Obanikoro’s two sons – Gbolahan and Babajide.

Out of the N4.7bn, Obanikoro allegedly gave N3.880bn to Ayodele Fayose and Senator Iyiola Omisore in July 2014, when they were the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidates in Ekiti and Osun states respectively.

Part of the money allegedly given to Fayose was said to have been converted to $5.377m and handed to him at Spotless Hotel, Ado-Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts.

Obanikoro allegedly kept over N600m to himself.

The EFCC subsequently seized a house in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State allegedly belonging to Obanikoro’s sons – Gbolahan and Babajide – and a property located at 44 Mamman Kotangora Crescent, Katampke Extension, Abuja, belonging to their mother.

However, Obanikoro’s wife argued that she bought the property over seven years before the alleged arms scam took place.

She said the EFCC had no right to punish her for any crime allegedly committed by her husband and urged the court to award her N200m.

Obanikoro’s wife demanded “an order setting aside the sealing of the property; an order directing the EFCC to tender an unreserved public apology for the unlawful and unconditional invasion of the aforesaid property and the sum of N200,000,000 as general damages for the unlawful and unconstitutional invasion of the property.”

In an affidavit, deposed to by one Jackson Edet, the EFCC claimed that Obanikoro’s wife could not claim to be ignorant of her husband’s alleged crime.

The commission said Moroophat’s husband and her sons collected over N600m from the ONSA for a non-existent contract.

The EFCC argued that investigation had shown that, “the property belongs to Musiliu Obanikoro and he paid for the statutory charges for the property.”

The commission added, “That a lawyer, Tejumola Adeboye, who volunteered a statement to the commission, stated that he managed the said property and remits the rent to MON Integrated Services (a company allegedly owned by Obanikoro, which is also under probe).”

In his ruling, the Justice Y. Halilu said he could not stop the EFCC from doing its work, adding that all Nigerians must unite in the fight against corruption.
He added, “I shall refuse the application because it is most unmeritorious and specially packaged to deceive this court. God forbid.”

Bad Leadership, Not God, Responsible For Nigeria’s Woes Obasanjo Says

by
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said lack of good leadership and not God is responsible for the nation’s woes.
He also said that the present generation of leaders had failed the country because they lacked the focus and commitment to move the nation forward.

Obasanjo, who identified bad leadership as one of the problems confronting the country, noted that his generation might have failed in raising Nigeria to where it should be but said they (his generation) had fared well in keeping Nigeria united under a stable democratic dispensation.

Obasanjo spoke as the chairman of the 38th Kaduna International Trade Fair’s Seminar with the theme, ‘Promoting Public Private Partnership as Panacea for Accelerated Growth and Development,’ organised by the Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture on Monday.

He added that Nigerians must learn to stop blaming God for the nation’s woes, saying “let us stop troubling God, because God has done all we need for us, we only need to play our own part.”

Obasanjo stated that if Nigerians should pray to God, “our prayer should be that God should not take away all He has given to us as a nation.”

This, the former President said, was because God had given Nigeria everything it needed to be great but for the leadership problem bedeviling the country.

He said, “God in His mercy has given us all the needed resources, both human and natural, but we have not been able to put them together and manage them effectively. The countries that have developed and are performing better are not better than Nigeria in terms of resources.

“One problem that must be corrected is the problem of leadership. This is because our leaders lack focus, commitment, continuity and sometimes proper knowledge about economic and development issues, hence we have not been able to achieve meaningful result.”

The former President added, “Somebody came to me and said we need to pray to God and I said, for what? He said, ‘so that God can do for us, what we cannot do for ourselves.’ And I said, no, let us stop troubling God, because God has done all we need for us, we only need to play our own part.”

Obasanjo faulted the lack of focus and capability of the nation’s leadership to handle the complex issue of the economy, noting that if Nigeria must get it right in its democratic journey, the problem of poor leadership must be resolved.

“Another problem is that, we take one step forward and another step backward. Nigerian leaders must be tough and ready to bite the bullet, because Nigeria cannot have it easy. Until we get the right leadership, the problem will continue,” he said.

Obasanjo, who traced the nation’s socio-economic and political history from independence to date, said the First Republic generation, led by its founding fathers, gave the country independence, but noted with sadness that the present generation had nothing to offer.

He said, “It doesn’t matter what you want to say about them, the Awolowos, Nnamdi Azikiwes, the Sardaunas, Aminu Kanos, Tafawa Balewas, gave us independence, they were not perfect and if you like, you can even go from now till tomorrow to condemn what they did, but they gave us independence.

“My own generation fought for the unity of Nigeria. You cannot deny that. There are many things we must have done wrong but we fought for the unity of this country. I still have sharp nails from grenades that entered my body that our brothers shot at me during the Civil War. But, at the end of it, we reconciled.

“In addition, my generation laid the foundation of democracy in the country. Our democracy is not perfect, our democracy is a journey and not a destination, we must continue to improve on it. My sons and daughters, what will your generation do?”

Besides, the former President said that lack of synergy between the public and the private sectors was responsible for the setback in the nation’s economy growth.

“The public sector perceives the private sector as a profit-making industry that reaps where it does not sow, but in actual fact, they are two legs that when brought together can accelerate development in all sectors of the economy,” he stressed.

He said public and private sectors must work together to accelerate growth and development.

Obasanjo said, “When we were in office, we privatised the NNPC and sold it to Dangote and partners, but the government that succeeded me revoked it and that is why till today, the NNPC cannot work optimally.

“Today, the same Dangote that was denied ownership of the NNPC is building a refinery that can produce in excess of what the NNPC can produce and what Nigeria can consume. So, it means he will even export.”

Earlier, a former Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, who delivered a paper on ‘Promoting Public Private Partnership As Panacea For Accelerated Growth And Development,’ had called on the government to encourage the concept of Public Private Partnership for the growth of the nation.

Usman said the country needed foreign capital and expertise to augment the resources that the country could afford to generate.

Also, the KADCCIMA President, Dr. Muheeba Dankaka, had explained that the theme was chosen to highlight the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to enhance the business environment through massive infrastructure development.

FG activates $20bn Ogidigben Gas Industrial Project

by
This is a Press statement from the office of the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, which was released on Monday, Feb. 27, 2017.
In what is called a ‘Gas Revolution,’ and following the renewed interactive engagements of the Federal Government with oil-producing communities in several states in the Niger Delta region, a plan to put in place a gas industrial park that is valued at about $20B through a Public-Private Partnership model is now in process.
Tagged the Gas Revolution Industrial Park, GRIP, Ogidigben, and envisaged to be a regional hub for all gas-based industries, the project will cover 2700 hectares with fertilizer, methanol, petrochemicals, & aluminium plants located in the park that has already been designated as a Tax Free Zone by the FG.
Speaking today at the Presidential Villa while meeting with international developers and investors of the project, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, stated that the Buhari administration “is committed to the development of the Niger Delta, and the importance of this project is underlined by the presidential attention it is attracting. The presidency is very interested.”
Before he went on vacation, President Muhammadu Buhari had mandated the Vice President to embark on visits to oil-producing communities to demonstrate the resolve of this administration to the pursuit of a new vision for the Niger Delta.
The building of an industrial gas hub in Ogidigben, Delta State was one of the feedbacks that was received during the visit to the state.
As a follow-up on the Niger Delta trips, Acting President Osinbajo, alongside the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources; Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Group Managing Director; Dr. Maikanti Baru and other top government and NNPC officials met today with a a group of international investors and developers put together under a consortium by Dubai-based firm, AGMC.
The consortium is made up of Fortune 500 companies like the GSE&C of South Korea, the China Development Bank, Power China and several others global operators from Asia and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle-East.
Under the plan presented today by the consortium to the Acting President, about $20B would be invested to develop the Gas Revolution Industrial Park, and generating 250,000 direct and indirect jobs in the process.
The industrial park would be a cluster for several industries in one location benefiting from an efficient, cost-competitive and abundant supply of natural gas, proximity to a deep sea port and centralized utilities, & services such as uninterrupted power, world class telecommunications and processed water.
The park, originally conceived by NNPC, is located about 60km from Warri, and is about 1km away from the operational base of Chevron Nigeria Limited. It will be connected to over 18 trillion Cubic Feet of gas reserves in fields such as Odidi, Okan, Forcados, located within a 50km radius. It is equally planned that the park will be connected to Nigeria’s most dominant gas pipeline network-ELPS, enabling supply of gas to and from the park.
According to the Acting President “we already have a Steering Committee in place, chaired by the Honorable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and that shows the level of our commitment. We are unwavering.”
Continuing Prof. Osinbajo added that “we take the project very seriously and glad to see you are committed and ready to make several other commitments. This is a process that we intend to see happen.”
In his own remarks, Dr. Kachikwu expressed confidence that the GRIP will bring the much needed succor to the people of the Niger Delta, and the oil-producing states.
Speaking earlier the leader of the group of investors and developers, Sheik Mohammed Bayo stated the commitment of the consortium, adding also that the project is important to solving the Niger Delta crisis.

Wife Assassinates HYusband Over Affair With Young Woman

by
A teacher has admitted to hiring gunmen to shoot her cheating husband, an ex border ranger in the Thung Song area of Nakorn Sri Thammara, Thailand. Wichai Seedarort, 61, had just taken his wife, Rawwadee Seedarot, 55, to school last Friday morning, February 24th, on a motorcycle and was on his way home when he was shot three times in the back, reported Thairath.

Two men had followed him from the school on another bike. The gunman then coolly got off the bike and fired one more shot to finish him off.

The hitmen are believed to be locals and are being hunted. Thung Song police said a massive investigation was mounted after the assassination and they soon had a warrant issued for the arrest of the victim's wife.

After an intense interrogation she broke down in tears and admitted that she had hired an intermediary to contact two gunmen to kill her husband.

Wichai was a former border ranger attached to the Sri Nakharin Camp 42 in the southern province. The wife said that she had paid 17,000 baht up front and was due to pay the rest on completion of the crime. But she was arrested before she could pay.

She said she asked 39 year old Arundech (Dech) Janprung to arrange the hit. He has also been arrested but denies involvement. Raewadee said she ordered the hit after confronting her husband many times over an affair with a young woman.

She said that she was constantly beaten by him in relation to the affair that he would not end. She could not tolerate his behavior so decided to have him shot.

Thung Song police said that Dech was likely to change his story when cops arrest the hired gunmen who they believe are locals in Thung Song.

They expect an arrest shortly. "We solved the crime in just one day," said a spokesman at Thung Song station.

The local district chief said that the teacher wife had been suspended from her duties as the investigation continues. Both her and the alleged organizer of the hit have been detained.

'Let's Make This Fight Happen'- Floyd Mayweather Calls Out UFC Star Conor McGregor To Fight Him

by
Retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather has called out UFC champion Conor McGregor, saying it's high time they fought for the enjoyment of the fans.

McGregor and Mayweather have been attacking each other on social media for months now and the retired boxer who turned 40 on Saturday has now officially called out the UFC star.

'I'm here to say today, on my birthday, they keep throwing the Conor McGregor name out there,' Mayweather told Showtime Boxing. 'Conor McGregor, like I said before, I'm here let's make it happen.'
'Let's make the fight happen. Let's give the fans what they want to see. There's only one fight out there that's important and that's Mayweather and Conor McGregor.'

Mayweather has already been made the overwhelming favorite as the fight between him and Conor will be a boxing match with McGregor, a kick boxer/martial artiste never engaged in a professional boxing fight before..

But Mayweather has insisted that Conor can still match him in the ring as a boxer.
'I mean cause every time Conor McGregor goes out there and compete and win, he do it standing up,' Mayweather said in response to the idea that he'll defeat Conor.

'When Conor McGregor did lose, he lost on the ground. He didn't lose standing up. So he's a hell of a fighter and a very, very tough competitor and he has the will to win.

'The UFC gloves is no different from boxing gloves, they just a little bit smaller but if a guy got power, he got power and Conor McGregor got power.'

We don't really have to talk about that. We already know what my number is. My team and us, our number is there,' Mayweather said reference how much guaranteed money he would need to fight McGregor.

'He has to get his thing in order with his team.
'Once Conor McGregor speaks with the UFC and his bosses, and then we can make it happen. Because we already know that Floyd Mayweather is his own boss.

We've got Showtime [pay-per-view], Mayweather Promotions, which is the past and present and the future of sports and entertainment.'

He added:
'I don't know if the fight is going to happen. If it did happen that would be my last, my final fight. It can be the biggest fight in the history of the sport, we just don't know.'

How Chance the Rapper got big without a record deal

by
Chance the Rapper made history at the 59th Grammy Awards, snagging three awards without selling a single physical copy of his music. The 23-year-old is an independent artist, untethered from the whims of a record label — further proof he’s doing things his way.
“I think…the idea of somebody owning the recording of your music…I think there’s a lot of attention on me not signing a record deal. But I also don’t believe in publishing deals or most of the traditional upper management style of music being distributed. I think whoever makes [the music] should have a say in when they release it, what they release, how much it costs,”
Chance the Rapper told Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric in an interview last week.

Chance was only eligible for a Grammy because The Recording Academy updated its rules to include streaming-only services for the awards last year. His third mixtape, “Coloring Book,” which garnered widespread acclaim, was released exclusively on Apple (AAPL) Music.

Of course, he acknowledges the challenges that come with eschewing a record label, like having a tough time topping the charts or getting played on the radio.
“For a long time, I think I missed out on a lot of opportunities, because I was kinda in a rat race where everybody else just had a boost. But it’s becoming more and more recognized that everyone starts out as an unsigned artist…and being signed doesn’t necessarily make you more validated as an artist,” he said.

ESCHEWING THE 360 DEAL

360 deals, or contracts that allow record labels to receive a percentage of the earnings from all of an artist’s activities (not just record sales), gained a lot of traction in the 1990s and 2000s, according to Chance.
“For a new artist the 360 deal is like a ‘double edged sword.’ A ‘hungry’ artist would love to be signed to any major record label; but if you have to include the label in on additional income you make, an artist is putting more money in the label’s pockets than in their own bank accounts. If a music client is offered a 360 deal, advise them and counsel them to make the choice that is best for their career in the long term, and of course negotiate, negotiate, and negotiate,” Tiffany Simmons-Rufus explains in “An Overview of the 360 Deal” for The American Bar Association.
For his part, Chance doesn’t see the benefit in compromising his own interests for the sake of the label’s.
“[In a 360 deal], the artist is completely owned by a label…I don’t like being owned. That’s not my thing. That’s not what I’m into,” he told Couric.
And, because he’s so passionate on the topic, he’s encouraged his peers to go independent as well. Following suit, his fellow artists Frank Ocean and Lupe Fiasco have ditched their record deals.
“I get to choose how much my music costs. I get to choose when my music gets released. I choose when I go on tour, who I work with, what movies I work with,” he said.
HOW DOES CHANCE MAKE MONEY?
By bypassing any complicated relationship with a record label, Chance said he has bolstered his relationship with consumers. The rapper’s independence has made Chance’s fans that much more loyal, and they often support him through his merchandise shop — his main source of revenue.

Chance’s signature “3” New Era Cap retails for $45 each and his $50 “No Problem” and “Coloring Book” hoodies have become ubiquitous among teens and adults alike.

In addition to his paraphernalia, Chance also makes money from concert tickets, of course. He has nearly 40 shows scheduled for his spring tour starting in April.

Though Chance “thinks about [signing] all the time,” he remains steadfast in his quest for creative freedom.

Waldorf Astoria, Legendary New York Hotel, Closes For Facelift

by
It's goodbye for now to the grand Art Deco lobby and celebrities crossing paths en route to "The Towers" at the Waldorf Astoria: one of the world's most luxurious hotels is closing for renovation.
The legendary establishment opened at its Park Avenue location in midtown Manhattan in 1931 with more than 1,400 rooms, the largest -- and tallest -- anywhere at the time.
It has hosted a stream of international political leaders, movie stars, tycoons and power players of all kinds for more than 85 years.
From Marilyn Monroe to Grace Kelly, US presidents Herbert Hoover to Barack Obama, as well as global leaders in town for the United Nations General Assembly every year, the Waldorf Astoria has been the place to be.
The hotel is massive, occupying a full city block of prime New York real estate.
Famous for its upscale services, the Waldorf says it invented the concept of 24-hour room service.
The Art Deco style is carried through details down to the door handles in the lobby bathrooms.
However, the grande dame is showing her age.
- 'Very, very sad' -
Guests have complained about dated rooms, peeling paint and issues with cleanliness.
The hotel's owner, Anbang Insurance Group, says it will close the hotel indefinitely for major renovations starting Wednesday.
The Chinese company bought the historic gem in 2014 from the Hilton hotel chain for $1.95 billion.
Although it has released no official renovation plan, Anbang is expected to convert a large number of rooms into luxury apartments with boutique stores on the ground floor, leaving only a small part of the building as a hotel.
The facade -- which became an official landmark in 1993, joining the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge -- is in no danger.
But the interior is not protected under the landmark designation, and some are worried that such treasures as the four-story grand ballroom and sprawling mosaic by the French artist Louis Rigal decorating the entrance will disappear forever, despite Anbang's promise to consult preservation officials.
"I'm very, very sad," said 70-year-old Donna Karpa from Washington, a regular from the age of five who was in town for the weekend.
"I'd come every year as a little girl," she said. "We would come with my family for Christmas and we'd see the Rockettes (dance show) and we would go ice skating at Rockefeller Center. It's great and the location is wonderful!"
Sandra Thomson, a Briton from Birmingham, left enchanted after six days in the hotel with her family to celebrate her daughter's 18th birthday.
"We just absolutely loved it!" she said. "I love the architecture, all the Art Deco and also the history. It's just an icon of America, isn't it? And you want to experience it."
- 'All the one-percenters' -
Besides the guests' many wows, the hotel's employees -- 1,400 of them in total -- chiefly remember the rich, famous and powerful who have frequented the Waldorf every day.
A stay by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt -- one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples until their breakup last year -- is still fresh in everyone's minds. But each has a favorite memory of a striking encounter.
Michael Romei, head concierge of the 42-story central tower known as the "The Towers" -- a hotel-within-a-hotel boasting the most luxurious suites -- has stopped counting the celebrities he's met during his 23 years of service.
His best memory: "Being blessed by the Dalai Lama."
"This is such a great place to work!" said Paul Hopkins, who has been a bellhop here for a dozen years. "Right in the elevators, you can meet so many celebrities, all the different presidents, lots of CEOs, all the one-percenters!"
Some criticize Obama's break with decades of tradition in 2015 following Anbang's takeover by deciding not to stay at the Waldorf and to no longer put up US diplomats here during the UN's General Assembly.
Ivona -- a hostess at the hotel's Peacock Alley restaurant who declined to give her last name -- called it a "slap in the face."
But just like many of the guests, the hotel's employees agree that even if they adore the place, it's time to refresh.
"We love the nostalgia, but it's kind of dated," said Ron Ruth, an aircraft mechanic from San Francisco who came for his 23rd wedding anniversary.
"The heating and the cooling, and the bathrooms are really small, too small for my wife!"

Pentagon Delivers Draft Plan To Defeat Islamic State To White House

by
A Pentagon-led preliminary plan to defeat Islamic State has been delivered to the White House and U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will brief senior administration officials later on Monday, a Defense Department spokesman told reporters.
Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters that it was the framework for a broader plan and looked at Islamic State around the world, not just Iraq and Syria.

Davis said the plan would define what defeating Islamic State meant and was one that would rapidly defeat the militant group.

He added that Mattis would discuss the plan, which is primarily a written one with accompanying graphics, with members of the cabinet-level Principals Committee on Monday afternoon.

The review of U.S. strategy comes at a decisive moment in the U.S.-led coalition effort against Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria, and could lead to relaxing some of the former Obama administration's policy restrictions, like limits on troop numbers. The Trump administration has said defeating "radical Islamic terror groups" is among its top foreign policy goals.

The Baghdad-based U.S. commander on the ground, Army Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, has said he believes U.S.-backed forces would recapture both of Islamic State's major strongholds - the cities of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria - within the next six months.

Iraqi forces expect a fierce battle against Islamic State to retake Mosul.

In Syria, the United States must soon decide whether to arm Syrian Kurdish YPG fighters, despite objections from NATO ally Turkey, which brands the militia group as terrorists.

The U.S. military-led review includes input from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, as well as from the Treasury Department and the U.S. intelligence community.

Davis said that in addition to diplomacy, the plan would include a military framework that builds on capabilities and goals on the battlefield.

Jimmy Kimmel Takes Jabs At Donald Trump While Hosting The Academy Award, Tweets At Him Live On Ttage

by
Jimmy Kimmel, while hosting the Oscars 2017 made President Donald Trump the butt of his jokes throughout the night, taking time to subtly criticize the president and even went as far as tweeting at him twice.

While giving his opening monologue, Kimmel insinuated that most of the countries of the world now hate America because of Trump's policies.

He then took to Twitter while still on stage to send messages to Trump, in what is believed to be a slight Jab at the President for always using the social platform to air his grievances.

"Hey @realDonaldTrump u up?" one of his tweets read.
The other said; "@realDonaldTrump #Merylsayshi."
Donald Trump had earlier attacked actress Meryl Streep for her political Golden Globes speech which criticized him, calling her "over-rated", and Kimmel used his position as the host to help redeem Meryl. First, Kimmel tried for sarcasm as he called on the crowd to give a "highly overrated" Meryl a standing ovation for her 20 oscar nominations all through her career. He said;
"One actress has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances. This is Meryl's 20th Oscar nomination... she wasn't even in a movie this year, we just wrote her name in out of habit.""Nice dress by the way... Is that an Ivanka?" Kimmel asked Streep, alluding to Trump's daughter's fashion label, which has been dropped by major stores like Nordstrom.
Kimmel also predicted that Trump will tweet criticisms at the Oscar winners' acceptance speech "in all caps during his 5 a.m. bowel movement tomorrow". So far, Trump is yet to reply to the taunts from Kimmel and other Oscar winners who criticized him in their speech.

Asides Kimmel, a number of other Hollywood personalities waxed political during their speech, Alessandro Bertolazzi, a well-known makeup artist dedicated his win to "all the immigrants". Moonlight director Barry Jenkins promised the people who do not feel like they have the needed support from the president that the American Civil Liberties Union and artists have got their back over the next four years that Trump is president.
On his part, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi winner of the Academy Award for best foreign film for his drama The Salesman, was not present to accept his win and according to him, it was out of "respect for the people of my country" who have been banned from entering the United States.

Mexican actor, Gael García Bernal, also weighed in as he presented an award saying: "I'm against any form of wall that wants to separate us."

2Face Idibia donates N3.5million to IDPs

by
Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face, on Monday, February 27th, presented a cheque of N3.5million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lagos
Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Face, on Monday, February 27th, presented a cheque of N3.5million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lagos

Speaking at the presentation, the musician said that he was particularly touched when he visited camps of the Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in the North-East.
He called on other well-meaning Nigerians to come all out and support the International organisation in its effort at protecting the millions of Nigerians in the various camps.

"The conditions I met the internally displaced persons, when I visited their various camps were terrible. They were really terrible," he said.
"The 2Face Foundation has, therefore, decided to enter into partnership with the UNHCR to see how we can help put smiles on the faces of these persons. My foundation is today presenting this cheque to the UNHCR to support it in its operations of alleviating the sufferings of these IDPs," he added.

In her remark, the UNHCR’s Acting Country Representative to Nigeria, Ms Brigitte Mukango-Eno, commended 2Face for the humanitarian gesture, adding that her Agency currently needed public support for its operations in the North East.

Mukango-Eno, who was represented UNHCR’s External and Donor Relations Officer, Mr Hanson Tamfu, said that the activities of Boko Haram in the North- East had overstretched the agency’s financial base.
“We sincerely want to express the gratitude of the UNHCR to 2Face. This is a right step toward our private sector following. Over these years, it has become important for us, as an organisation, to depend on the private sector, for us to be able to meet our responsibilities.

2Face has scored a very important goal by discovering the UNHCR Office within the UN system. We want to use this opportunity to appeal to other private Nigerians and philanthropists to emulate this gesture by the 2Face Foundation in alleviating the conditions of the IDPs in the North East," she said.

Yes, Sunny Pawar From ‘Lion’ is Adorable but Why Was Everyone Picking Him Up Like a Toy?

by
After Sunday night’s Academy Awards, it became pretty clear that there’s a hot new accessory in Hollywood: 8-year-old Sunny Pawar.

The adorable child actor from the acclaimed movie, Lion, made the rounds both on the red carpet and off, and even nabbed an unofficial starring role during one of Jimmy Kimmel’s bits.

In fact, it seemed like the kid couldn’t even walk two feet without some other celebrity sweeping in and picking him up.

Dev Patel, who co-starred with Pawar in Lion, couldn’t help but pick up Pawar, as evidenced by a snapshot of them from the Weinstein Company’s pre-Oscars dinner.

Patel hoisted the Pawar onto his hip and looked completely star-struck by the small thesp.

While Pawar looked totally comfy in his co-star’s arms, he looked a little less so when Jerry O’Connell scooped him up.

On the arrivals carpet, correspondent Jerry O’Connell coerced the boy into getting onto his shoulders to get a better view of the scene. After greeting the tyke, O’Connell asked if he could actually see what was going on.

Before Pawar was able to answer, O’Connell asked if he wanted to get onto his shoulders. Pawar looked at his dad (probably to see what he thought of this suggestion), but before his dad could reply, O’Connell just decided to do it.

O’Connell then announced to everyone who was listening (which was no one) that this was the star of Lion and Lion was “winning tonight.” He even added a fist-bump for effect.

Later, Jimmy Kimmel took a page from O’Connell and began bantering with Pawar in front of the star-studded audience. After reminding everyone that Pawar was in Lion, the host asked the child if he had ever seen The Lion King. (Apparently the connection was the word “lion” in the titles.) After Pawar said he had seen the 1994 Disney flick and confirmed that he liked it,

Kimmel asked if he “wanted to do the thing where the lion king lifts the kid up in the air.” Pawar said “yes” and Kimmel lifted him up to create the famous pose of Rafiki presenting Simba while the soundtrack filled the auditorium.

While it was a hit with the crowd present, users on social media weren’t so sure about the move. “Yeah. let’s lift the ethnic kid to the Lion King music. oh boy Jimmy,” one user tweeted.

Another added, “Yeah…that whole picking up the little brown boy with the Lion King theme music thing was kinda racist. Actually, not kinda. Definitely.”

It’s hard to imagine that anyone picked Pawar up for any reason other than he is the cutest kid ever, but it’s also not hard to see how some viewers might not appreciate the whole “pretending the kid is a lion cub” thing. Regardless, it’s pretty safe to say that at some point,

Pawar won’t be 8 years old anymore and this whole trend will come to a natural, necessary end.

See the Looks on Meryl Streep, Matt Damon, and The Rock’s Faces as Epic Oscars Flub Is Revealed

by
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when we look at this, we see just three letters: OMG!

On Monday, hours after the Oscars aired and included an epic flub of the Best Picture category (La La Land was announced as the winner when it was really Moonlight), a photo capturing the reactions of audience members including Meryl Streep, Matt Damon, Michelle Williams, and the Rock made its way to social media. Talk about best picture — the genuine, truly shocked looks on the faces of these actors are a sight to behold.

Busy Philipps, who attended the show with BFF Williams, shared the shot, writing, “Just woke up. 4000 of my closest friends have texted & emailed me about this picture. I’m so glad there’s visual evidence of what it was like to be sitting there in that moment. I MEAN!!!!”

If you slowly go face by face you’ll see what we mean. Damon’s expression perhaps said it the best … until you see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s eyes. Streep looks horrified. Salma Hayek looks like she had the wind knocked out of her. Mel Gibson is in shock. Williams and Philipps were giving some good jaw-dropping OMG faces. These are the best actors in the biz, after all.

Now, we’re not sure what Ben Affleck is looking at. He’s either trying to make eye contact with BFF Damon (Did that just happen?) — or maybe he was still processing his brother Casey’s Best Actor speech, which made him tear up. (Don’t let me get caught crying on camera after the commercial break, too!) Sting and Trudie Styler weren’t really showing big reactions either — perhaps they were just in the midst of one of their (mental) marathon tantric sex sessions. (Just spitballing here.)

Warren Beatty, who along with his co-presenter Faye Dunaway was responsible for the gaffe (they had the Best Actress envelope, but inexplicably still read it), spent the better part of the post-show defending himself. Outside the Dolby Theatre en route to the Governors Ball, the 79-year-old actor told a small cluster of reporters, “I read the card that was in the envelope. I read it but I didn’t say La La Land. I thought, ‘This is very strange because it says Best Actress on the card.’ And I felt that maybe there was some sort of misprint. As planned, I gave it to Faye, [who said La La Land]. And that’s all I want to say on the subject.”

Beatty even carried the envelope, which he was wrongly handed to him by producers, around with him to the parties as proof of his innocence, according to the Daily Beast.

No matter how the mix-up happened, the dramatic moment at the very end of the show certainly gave everyone a kick in the gut at the end of a long, drawn out, (did we say long?), awards show. The A-listers in the audience, included.

2 Chinese Arrested In Nigeria For Importing Over N5 Billion Worth Of Substandard Tyres (Photos)

by
Two Chinese, Tanlong Shen and Xu Jing Yao, have been arrested by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, for importing substandard tyres believed to be worth over N5billion.

This was made known by the SON Director General, Osita Aboloma, as he led journalists on a tour of the warehouse in Satellite Town, Lagos, where two million imported substandard tyres were seen.

The Chinese reportedly import the tyres into the country through means that compromise their quality, thereby churning out weak, substandard tyres which endanger the lives of people.

Not only were the tyres of poor quality, their manufacturing dates were also post-dated to make them appear new and road worthy. It was revealed that the Chinese distributed fake tyres under different brand names like; Grandsonte, City Tour, Duraturn, Aptany, Powertrac, City Grand, Bearway and more.

The Chinese were apprehended with the aid of intelligence received from well meaning Nigerians, which helped the SON Directorate of Compliance to intercept one of the trucks belonging to the Chinese and track it to lead them to the rest.

While speaking to journalists, Aboloma said;
“We acted on the intelligence we received from well meaning Nigerians. This was achieved as a result of inter-agency collaboration. The glory is not for SON alone."You can see volume of tyres brought in and you can imagine the implication for our society if these tyres are let into the market.”
Just last year, the FRSC reported that the use of fake and expired tyres is responsible for more than 3,000 road traffic accidents that occurred in the last five years, with vehicle owners and drivers caught with expired tyres. At the time, the Assistant Corps Marshal in charge of Policy, Research and Statistics, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, had spoken on the dangers of using substandard tyres, saying;

“Only the lucky ones are arrested by road marshals, but only the unlucky ones are arrested by road accidents.”

Jose Mourinho Reveals The Day He'll Retire From Football

by
Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, fresh from winning the English football league cup on Sunday night, has revealed the particular moment he'll retire from the game of football.

Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea last season before he took up a job at Manchester United and after winning the EFL cup was seen looking very emotional.

Man U. won Southampton 3-2 at Wembley courtesy of a Zlatan Ibrahimovic double and one from Jesse Lingard.

It's the first major honour the Special One has won at Old Trafford - and the fourth time he's won the League Cup as a manager.

Asked why he wasn't celebrating, Mourinho said:

"It's for them, it's for the fans. I take this because I've won it four times. I take this for me. It's the first one plus the Charity Shield. For the development of the team, there's nothing better than doing it with the feeling of trophies.

He claimed that he was right to be emotional – and said that the day football stops making him feel emotional will be the day he retires.

Mourinho said:
“I had my last one [trophy] here for Chelsea and it was as emotional. Winning is always special. The day I don’t get emotional when I win, that’s the time to go home.”

Dr. Chris Okafor Blasts Pastor Tunde Bakare, Rev. Fr. Mbaka, Demands The Release Of Nnamdi Kanu (Video)

by
In what many have termed the most heroic act yet by a Nigeria clergyman, Dr. Chris Okafor, the General overseer of Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministries, a.k.a Liberation City has truly caused a profound upset to both the political and religious establishment in Nigeria by his fiery admonitions during Sunday service at his church.

The Oracle of God, as he’s fondly called literally went nuclear when he angrily chastised the church leadership in Nigeria and wondered why they are so quiet in the face of mounting confusion, recession, destruction, oppression and killing of Christians in most parts of the country.

The fiery preacher accused most of the leading pastors who should be speaking out against injustice and bad governance of taking bribes like money and oil wells from the government hence their inability to defend Christianity and the masses

In a video that is now going viral on the Internet, Dr. Chris Okafor called out some big men of God when he angrily yelled, “SHAME UNTO PASTOR TUNDE BAKARE!” Then he preceded, “FATHER MBAKA, WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU?”

According to the man of God, Pastor Tunde Bakare was one of those who led the Save Nigeria (SNG) group to occupy Lagos while protesting so called bad governance under former president Jonathan, and was also a very vocal critic of that government. He wondered why Pastor Bakare has gone so silent even when it’s obvious that Nigeria now has a government that is far worse than the one he protested against. Speaking further on pastor Tunde Bakare, the man of God thundered, “That Pastor is a two-faced Pastor!”

On Father Ejike Mbaka, the man of God accused him of disqualifying former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration probably because, as alleged, he requested certain favors from that Government but was turned down. The man of God wondered why Father Mbaka who openly told the world that President Buhari was the messiah has now gone so silent, and is shamefully unable to even criticize his regime in the face of gross misconduct and bad governance.

Blowing hot, he said “Mbaka, go and examine your prophetic ministry”. He said that for Father Mbaka to now complain that people are dying of hunger and still find it difficult to criticize the government of the day simply makes him a hypocrite. He then went on to ask, “What has happened to you, Father Mbaka?”

The man of God did not spare the General Overseers of The Redeemed Christian Church of God when he made a veiled reference to the Redeemed Christian Church of God pastor who was killed during a morning cry session on the outskirts of Abuja and how the church played it down. At this he also wondered why the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo who is a pastor, has done so little to help. He also wondered why the General Overseer of Deeper Life Church has been quiet even when members of his church have taken a lot of hit from the massacre of Christians that has been ongoing.

Finally, the man of God also referenced the killing of one Imo State born Christian woman who was a few months ago beheaded in the Northern part of Nigeria. He then said “we also need to know if Rochas Okorocha is a Christian or a Muslim, because those people killed are from Imo State and he did nothing”.

The man of God said that if Christian leaders were speaking out and doing what they were supposed to be doing, we wouldn’t have a country where the rule of law means nothing and the government doesn’t even respect court orders. According to him “ why should Nnadi Kanu still be in detention when the court has given orders for his release? Why can’t they obey the court orders first, and then follow due process? Also, we know Dasuki may have done some things but if the court said you should release him, then release him, and let him have his time in court!”

He then went on to say that “as a matter of fact, the Government should release Kanu with immediate effect! We must obey the court and stop taking laws into our own hands!”
