Obie Trice says Machine Gun Kelly’s “Rap Devil” is best Eminem diss song

by
Obie Trice sat down with Hip Hop DX to discuss up and coming projects. During the interview he was asked about Eminem and MGK’s beef. This is what he had to say.
“You know I’m going to always go with Eminem—period, point blank,” Obie told HipHopDX. “I will say that Machine Gun Kelly was probably the best record that I heard that ever dissed Eminem.

He’s been in a lot of diss records with other people. I think that was probably the best one that came out.”

Bamford Double Gives Leeds Revenge Over Wigan

by
Leeds forward Patrick Bamford struck twice to claim a 2-0 win over Wigan in the Championship on Saturday which served as a measure of revenge for a damaging defeat by them last season.
The brace by Bamford against a Wigan side reduced to 10 men saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side go top on goal difference with five sides level on seven points after three matches of the campaign.

Wigan, also then with 10 men back in April, had inflicted what turned out to be a fatal blow to Leeds’ hopes of automatic promotion to the Premier League last term coming from behind to beat Bielsa’s side 2-1.

The former Argentina and Chile coach said he was pleased with the manner in which the team’s performance was evolving in every match.

The eccentric Argentinian also believes the brace could be just the tonic 25-year-old Bamford needed after being guilty of some awful misses for the club.

“For a striker, scoring goals is always going to be important,” said Bielsa.

“It’s going to be a major positive for him and also for the team. Bamford is a player with a big personality, and to score two goals is obviously going to be exciting for him,” added the 64-year-old.

The unlikely duo of south London rivals Charlton Athletic and Millwall — who held on to beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 despite being down to 10 men — are among those on seven points.

– Buoyant Bilic –

The other two are teams expected who could well contest the promotions spots West Bromwich Albion and Swansea.

Former Croatia and West Ham manager Slaven Bilic’s bright start at West Brom Albion continued as they came from behind to beat promoted Luton 2-1.

A double from substitute Grady Diangana turned the game on its head and changed Bilic’s mood.More in Sports

“We have to be there, in the first half we weren’t there, so you have to be there and eventually the ball will hit you,” said Bilic.

“After that we gained confidence, they were knocked down of course, because they conceded a couple of goals in a period of the game where they were totally out-played.”

Swansea lost some key players in the close season but their expensive Spanish signing Borja Baston appears to have at last clicked and begun paying back the £15million the club paid to Atletico Madrid in 2016.

The 26-year-old — who scored his first goal for them in more than 1,000 days on the opening day of the season — grabbed a double as Swansea came from 1-0 down to beat Preston North End 3-2.

“Borja is happy, he is a big character who is very well liked in the dressing room and you can see he is enjoying life in Swansea,” said manager Steve Cooper.

“We saw parts of Borja at his best today, and that is being in the box scoring goals.”

Middlesbrough’s gamble on appointing former Leeds and ‘Boro defender Jonathan Woodgate as manager is yet to pay dividends.

A 1-0 defeat away at Blackburn Rovers leaves ‘Boro with just a point from their first three matches and beaten on penalties by fourth tier Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup earlier in the week.

Woodgate will hope the board remain faithful to him unlike Huddersfield’s as the club relegated from the Premier League sacked German Jan Siewert following their 2-1 defeat by Fulham on Friday.

That left Huddersfield with just one point from three league games with a midweek League Cup defeat to third-tier Lincoln adding to the gloom.

Tribunal Fixes Date To Hear Closing Arguments On Presidential Election Petition

by
The tribunal is set to hear closing arguments on the Presidential Election Petition.
The date, August 21 has been fixed for parties in the case to present their closing arguments.

At the last sitting of the tribunal, the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his party had insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari was not qualified to contest the February 23 poll and he should be disqualified by the Tribunal.

In their final address to the tribunal, the petitioners claimed to have established the fact that President Buhari does not possess the requisite academic qualification for the position of President of Nigeria.

In the 43 page final address filed by their lead counsel, Dr Levy Uzoukwu SAN, Atiku and the PDP also said that even President Buhari’s own witnesses under cross-examination admitted to the fact that the President does not possess a school certificate, being the basic requirements for contesting for the position.

On the Cambridge University certificate tendered by President Buhari before the tribunal, the petitioners asked why, “it was easier for the President to go all the way to Cambridge in the United Kingdom to obtain what they call ‘a bogus document’, instead of just driving down the street in Abuja to the Army Headquarters or placing a phone call to the Secretary of the Military Board in Abuja to hurry over with his certificate or certificates”

On the claim that his certificates were with the military, the petitioners submitted that President Buhari failed woefully to prove the claim, as the petitioners’ evidence to the contrary was not contested nor challenged.

They also allege that they have successfully proved that the Nigerian Army had denied being in possession of President Buhari’s alleged certificates.

On the issue of rigging and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, the petitioners said with the plethora of evidence tendered and witnesses called they have been able to show to the tribunal that President Buhari’s election was invalid.

They added that an analysis of results from 11 states showed how INEC in connivance with the President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) wrongly and unlawfully credited President Buhari with votes not valid or lawful.

In their own address, President Buhari and the APC, asked the tribunal to reject some of the testimonies from the witnesses called by the PDP.

The PDP had called 62 witnesses, while the APC presented seven.

The APC and its candidate asked the tribunal to reject testimonies from witnesses 40, 59 and 60, and to also remove 28,000 exhibits presented by the PDP which included certified-true copies of result sheets from 10 states where Buhari had won.

Benue State govt meets Miyetti Allah, Stakeholders Over National Livestock Transformation Plan In The State

by
The Benue State Executive Council met with stakeholders drawn from the traditional institution, the church, socio-cultural organisations, the academia, civil society and Miyetti Allah associations over the National Livestock Transformation Plan, NLTP.
The meeting was to deliberate on the Federal Government proposed NLTP in order to take a position on implementation of the programme because it was earlier rejected due to lack of adequate information.

A statement by the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Timothy A Ijir and sent to DAILY POST, said the stakeholders went through the complete document which was recently made available to them.

The meeting was the second of its kind and was facilitated by Nyager, who represented the state Executive Council.

After exhaustive deliberations, stakeholders resolved to reconsider their position in view of the fact that they now have enough information to make an informed decision.

It was also resolved during the meeting that a technical team of experts is put together to study the NLTP document and identify areas suitable for implementation in Benue State based on peculiarities of the state.

The meeting also resolved that the NLTP should be domesticated in Benue State and to ensure that it conforms with the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state.

During the meeting, the State Executive Council stated that it is evolving its Agricultural Development Policy which captures the people’s interest.

Nikki Minaj And Kenneth Got A Marriage Licences

by
Nicki Minaj has answered Shakespeare's famous question, "What's in a name?" And, the answer is marriage.
Nicki just told her 20 million Twitter followers her account name from here on out is Mrs. Petty. As you know, her man is Kenneth Petty and there's been plenty of smoke she either gotten hitched or the storyline

Nicki and Kenneth hit up the Bev Hills courthouse earlier this month and got a marriage license. Our Nicki sources at the time told us her real name will change to Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty.

We heard rumblings she may have actually tied the knot days after getting the license, but we couldn't confirm that. We knew a bunch of friends flew out to L.A. that same week, but everyone was mum.

The marriage license is good for 90 days, but the reason it seems she wanted a quick marriage is because she had already announced earlier she and Kenneth took out a license in New York, so if there was no hurry they would have presumably just used that license to get married.

Samson Siasia Ban For Life By FIFA

by
FIFA on Friday banned former Nigeria Football Federation official Samson Siasia for life after the body’s ethics panel found him guilty of taking bribes in connection with match fixing.
In a statement, the adjudicatory chamber of FIFA’s independent ethics committee said the probe targeting Siasia stemmed from a wider investigation involving Wilson Raj Perumal, who has confessed to international match-fixing.

The probe that began in February found Siasia “guilty of having accepted that he would receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics,” the statement said.

In addition to being banned from all football related activity for life, Siasia was also handed a fine of 50,000 Swiss francs ($50,000, 46,000 euros).

Siasia, a former striker, also briefly coached Nigeria’s men’s national football team.

FIFA did not detail the nature of ties to Perumal, a Singaporean national who was arrested and jailed in Finland in 2011 for fixing top-tier football games there.

Perumal later collaborated with match fixing investigators.

Rick Ross Redponds To Nikki Minaj Telling Him To ‘Sit His Fat Ass Down’

by
Rick Ross is still out heavily promoting his Port of Miami 2project. He stopped by The Breakfast Club Thursday morning and of course, they couldn’t help but bring up the remark Nicki Minaj made about him on The Joe Budden Podcast.
Nicki claims when she was dating Meek Mill the Maybach Music Group head honcho said she was a keeper after she advocated for the Philly emcee to Barack Obama. However, he said he never trusted her in his “Apple of My Eye” single and she clearly wasn’t feeling that. But Rozay owned up to his comments and explained where he was coming from.

“I mean, if somebody went to meet Obama with you, she is a keeper until you find out otherwise,” said Ross. “She was around me a few times but other than that, she was a huge talent but she was playing a very important position at the time. She was in between Meek and Drake at the time.
And what she don’t know, and what she might not understand coming from a big homie like myself, playing that position, that was a very fragile role. And it would be very easy to put that responsibility on her. But that ain’t what I tried to make it to. But most definitely when I seen it go sour, it would be easy to assume she may have had something to do with that and if somebody tells you they didn’t, they’re lying.

But everybody moved forward. She moved forward, she doing her thing. I’m happy to see her do that. Meek doing his thing. Drizzy, they doing they thing.”

Obie Trice Returns With "92" Single & Weighs In On Eminem Vs. MGK Beef (DXCLUSIVE)

by
Obie Trice was waxing his first ever boat on a sunny day in Detroit when he got on the phone. The former Shady Records signee, who hasn’t released a proper studio album since 2015’s The Hangover, was in a noticeably good mood and happy to talk about his upcoming album The Fifth.

Ahead of its release, Obie has shared a snippet of the project called “92.” As the title suggests, the song is dedicated to 1992, a pivotal year for the now 41-year-old MC.
“’92 for me, that’s when I really, really started seeing these cats are getting money out here that’s my age,” Obie tells HipHopDX.
“It was like a real crazy year. That’s when I kind of got in the game and things of that sort. So, it was the year I became an adolescent and started doing things that I normally wouldn’t do when I was in middle school and just figuring out the ‘ching-ching.’ how the dope game go and everything like that.

Obie was captivated by Hip Hop culture at a young age and started rhyming when he was 11 after his mother gave him a karaoke machine. He explains multiple artists influenced him to pick up a mic.

“I can’t even just name a particular MC,” he admits. “We’d go on for days, you know what I mean? I just liked the culture back then when I was younger, and it was just a bunch of people. It’s not just one MC. Definitely the 808, the whole style of MCs, the different backgrounds and where people were coming from.
“I loved being able to see the world from your living room by just turning on videos, buying cassette tapes and listening to what people are saying from different places. So that was dope for me.”

Although “92” effortlessly retains that throwback feel, Obie says The Fifth is multidimensional.

“It’s different things,” explains. “I’m not going to give it away, but it’s different things on the record. ‘You & Her’ is a whole different vibe. It’s just a party vibe, end of the summer, twerking vibe for the ladies to dance to and have some fun with.”

After almost 30 years in the business, Obie’s priorities have naturally shifted. He’s got children of his own and is about to become a grandfather. At this point in his career, he puts out music when the timing feels right.

I’m just making sure my daughters are good and that I’m getting ready for my grandson,” he says. “That’s all I’ve been doing. I tour when I can and make music along the way, that’s all. I’m 41 years old so I make music and put it out when I feel like it. It’s no rush for me.
“All the hype is gone for me, you know? That’s the thing — we’ve been there, done that. I feel like I had an album done and I wanted to release it. I want to get back out here and see what the world think about it. That’s it.”

An Obie Trice conversation wouldn’t be complete without asking the “real name, no gimmicks” rapper about the Machine Gun Kelly and Eminem beefthat popped off last year.

You know I’m going to always go with Eminem — period, point blank,” he says. “I will say that Machine Gun Kelly was probably the best record that I heard that ever dissed Eminem. He’s been in a lot of diss records with other people. I think that was probably the best one that came out.
“But as far as a controversial thing, definitely Marshall [Mathers]. I gotta go with the home front forever. You know, that’s forever. So, I’m a little biased. You might want to be asking somebody else that, but you know, it is what it is. It’s forever Shady for me.”

He adds, “The whole thing was so long ago, man, I haven’t even been in that zone. I don’t even remember everything that was going on that time, what he did and how he did it. I’m really just focusing on my record and focusing on my boat right now to get this shit going.”

The Fifth is expected to arrive next Friday (August 23). In the meantime, check out “92” above

Katy Perry Says Orlando Bloom Has 'Mad Respect' for Ariana Grande After She Secretly Paid for Their Meal

by
Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are big fans of Ariana Grande and her sweet acts of kindness.
The "Never Really Over" singer stopped by Ellen K Morning Show last week, where she revealed that Grande secretly paid for her, Bloom and his 8-year-old son, Flynn's, meal.
"Two weeks ago, I was at sushi and I ran into Ariana Grande," Perry began. "At the end of my long meal with Orlando and his son, we finished after an hour-and-a-half and we asked for the check. They were like, 'Ariana Grande has taken care of it.' And we were like, 'Oh my god! That is so cool!' Orlando's son is eight, so he was like, 'Dope.'"

"But that is such a boss move and such a cute gesture," she added. "Orlando was like, 'Man, I have such mad respect for her.' She was so kind. I love little things like that."

Perry also talked about her new single, "Small Talk," and the meaning behind it.

"It's such a bizarre thing that we have to go through, not all of us, some people get lucky and marry their first love and stay with them forever," Perry said of her lyrics, "Going from strangers to lovers."
"If you're in the dating scene and you haven’t landed on the one, you go through this weird human experiment where you reveal your whole self to a person, you are so intimate with them and sometimes it doesn’t work out. You move on with your life, but you end up bumping into them."

Miley Cyrus's New Breakup Song Has Fans Saying 'Poor Liam

by
As well as, “Once upon a time it was made for us / Woke up one day and it turned to dust / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go.”
Most interesting is that the artwork shows bottles of booze and pills bobbing around a pool and she also sings, “I want my house in the hills / Don't want the whiskey and pills / I don't give up easily but I don't think I'm down."

It’s an interesting choice considering sources from Cyrus’s side told TMZ that Miley tried to save her marriage but her so-called dealbreaker was that Liam was drinking a lot and using certain drugs — and that she wanted to no part of it.

A similar story popped up on People magazine, “Everyone always thinks Miley is problematic and immature and a hardcore partier while he’s this chill surfer dude, but that’s actually [not accurate],” a friend of the couple said. “Liam parties with his friends, and Miley thinks he should’ve grown out of that by now.”

But there are two sides to every story. That narrative was spun after Cyrus, who identifies as queer, was seen kissing Kaitlynn Carter in Italy. They have since returned to L.A. together.

While the reaction to Miley’s new song has been amazing positive from within her circle...

Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Break Up 8-months After Marri

by
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have called it quits less just 8-months after tying the knot at a private ceremony back in December 23, 2018 at their home in Franklin, Tennessee.
Miley’s publicist released the statement below last night confirming the split.
Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.

They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy” a rep for Cyrus tells PEOPLE in a statement.

They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy” a rep for Cyrus tells PEOPLE in a statement.

Rumors of a split between Cyrus, 26, and Hemsworth, 29, began on Friday as Miley was spotted kissing Brody Jenner’s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter during a girls’ getaway to Lake Como, Italy.

Brody and Kaitlyn separated last week after just a year of marriage.

Photos of Miley and Kaitlyn making out caught many by surprise. Even though Miley has made it clear in the past that she likes women, The Hills star, Kaitlyn, wasn’t known as a bisexual woman.

Before confirming her split from Liam, Miley yesterday posted a photo of herself on Instagram in which she was not wearing her wedding ring; “Mute me if you don’t want SPAMMED,” she captioned the post.

The singer, who identifies as pansexual, revealed in a candid interview last month that she viewed her marriage to Liam as ‘confusing, complex and modern’, insisting that she was still ‘very sexually attracted to women’ and that she doesn’t ‘fit into a stereotypical wife role’.

The pair first met in 2009 while filming, The Last Song. They began dating shortly after and made their red carpet debut as a couple in 2010. They have dated on and off since 2010, and were initially engaged in June 2012 before calling it off in September 2013, they reconciled in 2016 and married in December 2018

Meghan Markle Trolled As Kate Is Nominated As “Force for Change’ On Social Media

by
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Instagram appeal for ‘Forces for Change’ has been hijacked by trolls nominating Kate Middleton.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had appealed for people to nominate causes and individuals that inspired them .

The pair said they would then select 15 suggestions who accounts they will follow during August to highlight “Forces for Change”.

But the post, which was shared at midnight on Thursday, has been inundated with comments suggesting Kate and William.

The Sussex Royal account did follow the Cambridges but unfollowed them and other royals while promoting Mental Health Awareness month in May.

At the time, fans misinterpreted the move as being a result of a rumoured feud between the two couples.

One post read: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, obviously.”

Another said: “Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Kate should be on the Vogue cover!”

Kanye West Surprises Former Manager John Monopoly with 2019 Lambo

by
What do you get a guy for his birthday when his name literally reminds you of moneybags? If you're Kanye West ... you go big, black and Italian.
Ye blew the doors off all birthday surprises when he showed up to his former manager John Monopoly's party at Delilah in WeHo Wednesday night with a brand new luxury ride fresh off the lot -- a customized 2019 Lamborghini SUV.
John told us the gift was from a "very good guy" and brother of his with whom he goes back 30 years. He's coy about it, never dropping a name, but it was pretty easy to figure out. Monopoly discovered West and served as his manager for his first 3 albums.

We also got a pic of Kanye after he made the special delivery to confirm the poorly kept secret.

We're told the customized SUV with the matte-black paint job goes for around $300k ... and John says he didn't even see it coming.

BTW -- Monopoly's bday bash was also a lot of fun on the inside of the club in the private VIP section. Along with Kanye, we're told rapper Cam'ron, fashion designer Don C and Jacob York were there.

Happy birthday, John!!!

Court sends Sowore to 45-day detention, Nigerians attack FG

by
The Federal Government and the judiciary came under attack on Thursday as a Federal High Court in Abuja granted the
Department of State Services permission to detain the publisher of SaharaReporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow protests, Omoyele Sowore, for 45 days.

Operatives of the DSS, had on Saturday, arrested Sowore over his call for revolution ahead of the #RevolutionNow protests which held in some parts of the country on Monday.

Ruling on an ex parte application by the security agency to detain Sowore for 90 days to investigate him for treason-related allegations, the judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo granted the agency permission to hold the activist for only 45 days.

According to the judge, the 45 days period, starting from Thursday, lapses on September 21,the date he also fixed for the next hearing session in the case.

He, however, said that the order of detention for 45 days was subject to renewal for further days upon an application by the security agency, in the event that its investigation could not be concluded within the first 45 days.

Applying for the detention order earlier on Tuesday, the DSS, through its lawyer, Mr G.O. Abadua, argued the ex parte application which it anchored on the provisions of section 27(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2013.

Ruling on Thursday, the judge said, although the hearing of the application was one-sided as legally allowed under the provisions of section 27(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act, he said he had to act on the facts alluded to by the applicant in the application until the contrary was proved.

He noted that he had watched the video clips attached to the application as exhibits, one of which was said to have shown a conference held by Sowore and the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, earlier proscribed by the Federal Government, Mr Nnamdi Kanu.

The other, also a video clip, was said to have shown Sowore saying that members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, the body of Shiites movement recently proscribed by the government,

The judge also said the use of the word, “may”, in section 27(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act, “is directory,” robbing him of discretion to decline to grant the application.

He said, “The word, ‘may’ is not always ‘may.’ Sometimes it is equivalent to ‘shall.’ See the PDP Vs Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

“I am of the view that the use of the word ‘may’ in section 27(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention) Amendment Act 2013 is directory and not mandatory.

“I have looked at the facts presented by the applicant, I will fail in my duties if I do not act on those facts at least until the contrary is proved.

“I shall therefore grant the application only to the extent that the applicant shall detain the respondent for a period of 45 days, in the first instance, which may be renewed upon application by the applicant for further number of days if investigation is not concluded by the applicant within the 45 days granted by the court.

“The return date shall be 45 days from today, August 8, 2019. It therefore means that this suit is adjourned till September 21, 2019.”

A handful of orange-beret-wearing supporters of Sowore were at the court on Thursday.

We’ll challenge order – Falana, Sowore’s lawyer

However, Mr Femi Falana (SAN), who is Sowore’s lawyer, indicated to The PUNCH on Thursday, that he would file an application to challenge the detention order.

Falana, who was unwilling to give much details, said Sowore had as of Wednesday envisaged the Thursday’s ruling and had instructed that it should be challenged.

The senior lawyer said, “I saw him yesterday (Wednesday) when he had already envisaged that the order for his detention would be granted. So he had already given us the instruction to challenge it.”

Despite this, many organisations including the European Union, Afenifere, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Free Nigeria Movement and senior lawyers including Mike Ozekhome (SAN), faulted the order.

While SERAP said it would petition the United Nations Human Rights Council on the continued detention of Sowore, Afenifere and Ozekhome called for the unconditional release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2019 presidential poll. They described the order as unjust.

SERAP petitions UN human rights council

SERAP on Thursday said it had petitioned the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva over the way police authorities clamped down on #RevolutionNow protesters on Monday.

The organisation asked the council to immediately convene a special session to probe Sowore’s arrest and repression of the protesters, including journalists who covered the protest. It described the order as repressive.

SERAP’s position was contained in an open letter to the council dated August 8 and signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare.

“There are serious violations of the rights of Nigerians to liberty, personal security, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and media freedom and a special session is urgently needed to help stem the attack on human rights and contribute to UN efforts to prevent further abuses, including arbitrary detention and excessive use of force,” it said.

SERAP said rights situation in Nigeria had deteriorated drastically as the federal and state governments refused to obey court orders.

It said, “We urge your delegation to actively support the holding of a special session of the Human Rights Council without delay and the adoption of a resolution that ensures meaningful attention to the situation with a view to stemming the abuses and ending impunity.

The Human Rights Council cannot ignore persistent attacks on human rights and disregard for the rule of law in Nigeria.

“If the Human Rights Council does not assume its responsibility and give voice to the victims, it would exacerbate the impunity of perpetrators and continue to fuel further abuses.”

SERAP also called on the council to ask Nigerian authorities to release unconditionally Sowore and all those detained in connection with the #RevolutionNow protests.

It further asked the council to demand that Nigerian authorities cooperate with the UN Special Rapporteurs, by allowing them free access to the country to investigate all allegations of human rights violations against protesters, journalists, bloggers and other Nigerians.

It added, “The authorities have arbitrarily arrested Omoyele Sowore, the organiser of the #RevolutionNow protests and publisher of the online newspaper SaharaReporters.

He is still currently detained by the Department of State Services. Several protesters and journalists continue to be targeted, including a former Politics Editor with Daily Trust, Ibrahim Dan-Halilu, who has been reportedly re-arrested

We stand on principle of free speech, says EU

Also, the European Union says protests remain a cardinal part of democracy as long as they remain peaceful.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Ketil Karlsen, however, said it was not the job of the EU to tell Nigeria how to conduct its internal affairs but added that the judiciary should be allowed to do its job.

Karlsen said this while responding to a question by The PUNCH at the departure orientation for the 2019 Erasmus+ Scholarship Awardees in Abuja on Thursday.

He said he was not aware of any petition sent to the EU by rights groups who have criticised the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government over the clampdown on protesters.

The ambassador said, “The European Union stands firm on the principles of freedom of speech and our fundamental values. Of course, it is important in any democratic society for people to be able to participate.

What I can say is that as long as people seek peaceful means to demonstrate and voice their political opinion, this is what we see as a natural part of a thriving democracy.
“Of course, any democracy or any society in the world must jealously guard and make sure that such pronouncements are always non-violent and that they respect the fundamental rules of the game and democracy.
“It is for the Nigerian justice system in the end to follow up on specific cases and as long as these cases are being dealt with in the Nigerian justice system, it is not for the EU or the EU ambassador to judge what is right or wrong in these occasions but of course we always follow very carefully when there are dissenting voices in the countries where we operate and we listen very carefully to all of them.”

Court ruling great injustice on Sowore, says Afenifere

However, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, the Afenifere, has slammed the Federal Government for arraigning Sowore under the Terrorism Act.

It also condemned the court ruling remanding the former presidential candidate in DSS custody for 45 days.

The National Publicity Secretary, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said the order marked “a new phase in the orchestrated conscription of the democratic space in Nigeria.”

The group said, “Sowore was arrested before he could commit an offence and the DSS seems to want to go shopping for evidence to prosecute him.”

Odumakin advised the government to act in conformity with the democratic tenets in dealing with the rights of Nigerians, describing Sowore’s detention as a great injustice.

Detention order depicts DSS misguided mischief – CDHR

Also, the CDHR described the detention order as mischief orchestrated by the DSS.

The President of CDHR, Malachy Ugwummadu, said, “The present dimension of the ordeal of Sowore is nothing short of the DSS’ misguided mischief to legitimise an otherwise illegal action through the courts.

“Clearly, we have all condemned the illegal arrest and detention of Sowore in the circumstance that it was made which was rightly characterised as a breach of his fundamental rights.

“To be sure, you cannot place something on nothing and expect it to stand. Thus, while the court may have found a way of justifying the continued detention of Sowore, it does not detract from the illegality of his arrest and detention in the first place.

“When did the Federal Government change the charge from treason and treasonable felony to anti-terrorism? This unholy wide fishing of both a charge and evidence is despicable against a person whose rights have been violated.”

Court-ordered detention of Sowore, bad news for democracy – Ozekhome

Similarly, Ozekhome has condemned the decision of Justice Taiwo, saying the judge “wrongly exercised his discretion,” and that he did not decide the case “judicially and judiciously.”

Questioning the judge’s decision, Ozekhome said, “Didn’t we, civil society and labour leaders, during successive military hunts and also during Obasanjo’s presidency, serially called for ‘revolution’, without any arms and ammunition?

“What happens to our citizens’ fundamental rights to freedom of speech, assembly and association as guaranteed by sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights?

“What happens to the Court of Appeal’s decision in IGP V ANPP, where it was held that no Nigerian required police permit to demonstrate and protest peacefully on the streets of Nigeria?

“To me, what all this boils down to is an intolerant government that is gravely and pathetically allergic to respect for human rights.”

Ozekhome said he found it ironical that the Federal Government easily obtained an interim order to detain Sowore from the same court, whose orders it had serially disobeyed.

The court-ordered detention of Omoyele Sowore on the application of the Federal Government is bad news for democracy and human rights, especially because the application was made and granted ex parte (behind Sowore’s back).
“What was the extreme urgency in the matter (usually the main grounds for granting ex parte orders) that the Judge couldn’t order the government (who, in any case was already detaining Sowore) to put him on notice?” Ozekhome queried.

Frank slams judiciary, seeks travel ban on corrupt judges

However, a political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Timi Frank, has described the judiciary as Nigeria’s major problem.

According to him, most judges are now shy and afraid of delivering fair judgment because of their corruption records.

He called on the international community to ban judges who could not summon courage to deliver the right judgment and their immediate family members.

Frank in a statement on Thursday in Abuja condemned the court ruling ordering Sowore’s detention for 45 days.

He said, “When people cannot get justice, they would sooner than later resort to self-help. Some corrupt judges presently manning some courts should not add to Nigeria’s woes because posterity’s unavoidable judgment awaits both the judged and the judges.

“I hereby call on Nigerians to prepare to take the protest to the door-steps of the judiciary as they are the biggest problem we have today.’

Charge Sowore with crime – CC

But the Centre for Change on Thursday condemned the ruling and called on the Federal Government to charge Sowore with crime rather than detaining him illegally.

The CFC in a statement by its President, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, said, “We insist, that if there is any iota of truth in the allegations being levelled against Sowore, by the Federal Government, it should be courageous enough to prosecute same in the open court, without further delay.”

Order unjust, release Sowore now, says FNM

Also, the Convener, Free Nigeria Movement, Raphael Adebayo, said Nigerians were appalled by the court order which he described as unjust.

He said the ruling was a testament to the entrenched injustice in the country which the #RevolutionNow protests intended to end.

The movement demanded Sowore’s immediate release, stating that his continued incarceration “will only hasten the revolution which has already begun in different parts of the country.”

Adebayo stated, “Any society where it is easier to persecute ordinary citizens than it is to prosecute the thieving elite is a society heading towards anarchy.

“By ordering the DSS to further detain Sowore, the court has made it clear that it is far from being an institution of justice in which the people can trust.”

Buhari Brief With Service Chiefs On , Killing Of Policemen In Taraba

by
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, disclosed this to reporters on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Abubakar was briefing State House correspondents at the end of the National Security Council meeting presided over by the President.

He said President Buhari also got briefed on the general security situation across the country.

According to him, the Council is satisfied with the efforts being made to secure the nation and promises to sustain the progress recorded so far.

The meeting had in attendance the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Abba Kyari, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin.

Also in attendance are the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai; the Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok Ekwe Ibas, as well as a representative of the Inspector General of Police and heads of other security outfits in the country.

President Buhari met with them following the killing of three police personnel and a civilian in a gunfight with troops of 93 Battalion Nigerian Army Takum in Taraba.

According to a statement from the police, the victims were on investigation activities to arrest one Alhaji Hamisu indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the state.

The Force said the operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they were police personnel on legitimate duty.

Reacting in a statement, the army explained that although the incident could have been avoided, the policemen “refused to stop when they were halted by troops at three consecutive checkpoints.”

It said the refusal of the security operatives to stop at the checkpoints prompted a hot pursuit by the troops, adding that policemen opened fire at the troops “sporadically” which prompted them to return fire.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has ordered full-fledged investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of three (3) Police operatives and one (1) Civilian, and serious injury to other Police operatives, who were on investigation activities to Ibi, Taraba State, to arrest one Alhaji Hamisu indicted in a series of high-profile kidnap incidents in the State.

The Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) reportedly came under sudden attack and serious shooting by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, along Ibi – Jalingo Road, Taraba State.

The Operatives, who were taking the arrested suspect, Alhaji Hamisu to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo, were shot at severally by the soldiers despite sufficient proof that they are Police personnel on legitimate duty.

Three Policemen (comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants) and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds. The soldiers thereafter released the handcuffed suspect, Alhaji Hamisu, who is now on the run.

Alhaji Hamisu, a notorious kidnap kingpin, has been on the Police wanted list for his complicity in several high-profile kidnap cases including the recent abduction of an Oil-Mogul in Taraba State wherein a ransom of about One Hundred Million Naira (N100,000,000) was paid.

DCP FRANK MBA

FORCE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER

FORCE HEADQUARTERS

ABUJA Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.2/68 Date: 7th August, 2019 on the unfortunate incident that occurred on the 6th of August 2019 in which troops of 93 Battalion Nigerian Army Takum pursued and exchanged fire with some suspected Kidnappers who indeed turned out to be an Intelligence Response Team from the Police Force Headquarters Abuja on a covert assignment from Abuja resulting in the death and injury of some members of the Team.

On the 6th of August 2019, the said Nigerian Army troops, while responding to a distressed call to rescue a kidnapped victim exchanged fire with the suspected kidnappers along Ibi-Wukari Road in Taraba State.

The suspected kidnappers numbering about ten (10) and driving in a white bus with Reg No LAGOS MUS 564 EU refused to stop when they were halted by troops at three consecutive checkpoints.

The flagrant refusal of the suspected kidnappers to stop at the three checkpoints prompted a hot pursuit of the fleeing suspects by the troops.

It was in this process that the suspected kidnappers who were obviously armed opened fire at the troops sporadically thus prompting them to return fire.

In the resultant firefight, four (4) suspects were shot and died on the spot while four (4) others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds and 2 others reportedly missing.

It was only after this avoidable outcome that one of the wounded suspects disclosed the fact that they were indeed Policemen dispatched from Nigerian Police, Force Headquarters, Abuja for a covert assignment.

However, following inquiries from a Police Station officer who was asked by the commander of the Army troops whether he was aware of any Nigerian Police team being dispatched to operate in the LGA, the Divisional Police Officer of Ibi Police Division responded that he was not informed about any operation by the Nigerian Police Force Headquarters thus lending credence to the distressed call from members of the community that the suspects who turned out to be Policemen on a covert mission were rather suspected kidnappers.

This incident is indeed quite unfortunate and could have been avoided through proper coordination and liaison as the Nigerian Police Force are partners in the fight against crimes such as kidnapping amongst myriads of other internal security threats confronting our nation of which the Nigerian Police is the Lead Agency.

In order to avert future occurrences of this nature, the Army Headquarters and the Force Headquarters of the Nigerian Police have agreed to constitute a Joint Investigation Panel to be headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Department, DIG Mike Ogbizi, to jointly investigate and report on the true circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

Therefore, until the Joint Investigation Panel concludes and submits its report, it will be premature to officially conclude and speak on the real circumstances that caused this unfortunate but very avoidable unfortunate incident.

JONAS BROTHERS FEELING SO COOL!!! Kick Off Happiness Tour

by
The Jonas Brothers are back on the road, picking up where they left off nearly 6 years ago when they abruptly split -- but there are a few very attractive changes this time around.
Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas finally kicked off their highly anticipated Happiness Begins tour Wednesday night in Miami. The trio's set blended new and old school -- from "Cool" and "Rollercoaster" to "Fly With Me," "Love Bug" and, of course, "Year 3000."

The wives also brought their talents to Miami. Priyanka Chopra, Danielle Jonas and Sophie Turner all proudly posed in front of a "J-Sisters" backdrop while rocking JoBros gear. We're guessing they had premium seating to soak up all the preshow chants of "JONAS! JONAS! JONAS!" inside the packed AmericanAirlines Arena.
Daddy Yankee, Jordan McGraw and Bebe Rexha also made appearances but the spotlight belonged to the bros -- who came out for an encore and performed their smash hit, "Sucker."

The trio and their ladies are traveling with their furry family members as well. Between Sophie, Joe, and Priyanka having extra friendly travel companions, it's a pretty packed flight.

A great ending for sure and nice way to erase their October 2013 memory ... when the brothers abruptly canceled their tour before officially breaking up.

Tony Cox Hits Kid On Bike With His Car "BAD SANTA STAR"

by
Law enforcement sources tell us the incident was an accident and the actor is not at fault. He was not arrested and was not issued a summons for the collision.
Tony Cox -- who starred alongside Billy Bob Thornton as his elf sidekick in the 'Bad Santa' films -- just delivered a terrible gift to an unlucky kid ... a foot injury and a busted up bike.

The veteran actor struck the boy on his bike Thursday in L.A. as he was turning right onto a street, while the kid was cruising through the crosswalk. As you can see ... the collision resulted in the bicycle's front tire getting pinned under Tony's ride.
We're told the kid suffered an injury to his foot as he was knocked off his Schwinn ... but was alert and conscious after the accident. EMTs arrived shortly afterward and he was taken to the hospital ... thank God he was wearing a helmet.

We've placed a call in with the LAPD who says they're still investigating the incident.
Cox started his career in 1980s in films like "Spaceballs" and "Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype." He's also been in "My, Myself & Irene" with Jim Carrey.

Taraba killing: Where’s kidnap kingpin? Police ask Nigerian Army

by
The police have asked the Nigerian Army to explain the whereabouts of the Taraba kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Wadume, allegedly set free by soldiers who reportedly attacked a police team conveying the suspect to Taraba State Police Command headquarters in Jalingo, on Tuesday.
The force also demanded explanations on why the suspect was released, insisting that he could not have escaped with handcuffs from his “military rescuers.”

The Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, had explained in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, that an Intelligence Response Team led by ASP Felix Adolije came under attack from soldiers while taking Wadume to the Command Headquarters in Jalingo.

During the attack, Inspector Mark Ediale, Sergeants Usman Danzumi, Dahiru Musa and a civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries, while others sustained gunshot wounds.

The Army in its reaction said the policemen failed to identify themselves to soldiers at a checkpoint on Ibi – Jalingo Road, adding that they mistook the police team for kidnappers.

But Mba in a statement on Thursday, picked holes in the military’s defense, stressing that Wadume who was in restraints could not have escaped from the soldiers after his purported rescue.

He said, “In the best tradition of esprit de Corps, inter-agency harmony and national interest, the Nigeria Police Force would naturally have kept quiet, but it has become imperative to set the record straight by addressing the obvious distortion of facts inherent in the press release by the Nigerian Army.

The most important question arising from the Nigerian Army statement is: Where is Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume? Wadume is a millionaire kidnapper arrested by the Police but paradoxically treated as a ‘kidnap victim’ by the soldiers and subsequently ‘rescued’ by them. Where is he? Where is the rescued kidnapper?”

The police wondered why Wadume was not taken to the Army Base for documentation and debriefing in line with NA’s standard operating processes

Why were the Police operatives shot at close range even after they had identified themselves as Police Officers on legitimate duty as evident in the video now in circulation?,” the force further asked.

It said that the Army was silent on the source of the alleged distress report or identity of the complainant whose report it claimed informed their decision to engage in the purported chase and rescue operation.

Beyoncé’s Historic Portrait To Be Added To The Smithsonian National Portrait Permanent Collection

by
This historic portrait of Beyoncé captured by photographer Tyler Mitchell will be displayed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
The portrait made history last year, when Mitchell became the first black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue at the age of 23.

Beyoncé specifically selected Mitchell to photograph her for the September 2018 Vogue issue.

Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like. It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists” she wrote in the issue.

Now, the National Portrait Gallery has acquired the photograph to add to its permanent collection.

Mitchell shared the news on Instagram saying; “a year ago today we broke the flood gates open. Since then it was important to spend the whole year running through them making sure every piece of the gate was knocked down. And now I’m glad to share this picture is being acquired into the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.”

A spokesperson for the National Portrait Gallery confirmed the acquisition saying the details over when and how the photo will be put on display are still being planned out.

The image features Beyoncé in a metallic sequin Valentino dress and a gold Philip Treacy headpiece.

President Buhari Orders Army Headquarters To Investigate Killing Of Three Police Officers In Taraba The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubak

by
President Buhari has directed the Defence Headquarters to commence immediate investigation into the killing of three police officers and a civilian by men of the 93 Battalion, Takum, Taraba
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, disclosed this when he briefed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the National Security Council, presided by President Buhari at the State House, Abuja today August 8th.

“The council also decided that the unfortunate incidents in Taraba State in Ibi, a committee will be setup under the Defence Headquarters to critically look into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.’’

Recall that the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Frank Mba, in a statement released yesterday August 7th, said Police Operatives, led by ASP Felix Adolije of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), came under sudden attack by soldiers along Ibi–Jalingo Road on August 5th. According to Mba, police team were in the state to effect the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin named Alhaji Hamisu. Mba said the Army officers saw them effecting the arrest, attacked the police officers and released the arrested kidnapper.

He added that three Policemen comprising one Inspector and two Sergeants and one civilian died as a result of gunshot injuries sustained in the attack while others sustained serious gunshot wounds.

The Nigerian Army has however denied the allegation. A statement from the Army headquarters earlier today, said the military officers thought the police officers were kidnappers.
