2019: APC Adopts Direct Primary For Presidency, Indirect For Others

by
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adopted direct primary election to select its candidate for the presidential election in 2019.
Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State disclosed this to reporters on Thursday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The APC adopted the process during its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held the party’s national secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory.

L-R: Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; President Muhammadu Buhari; and All Progressives Congress National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole

Governor Lalong also revealed that the party adopted indirect primaries for members contesting for other elective positions in the forthcoming elections.

However, he said states willing to hold indirect primaries depending on their peculiarities were asked to inform the National Working Committee NWC of the APC.

According to him, this will be subject to meeting certain conditions, including a resolution signed by the majority in the state supporting direct primaries.

The decisions followed the disagreement among some members of the party over the process of selecting a candidate to fly the party’s flag in an election.

This was one of the factors that led to the disruption of the first party’s primary in the build-up to the governorship election in Ekiti State in July.

Some members who defected from the party in Osun had attributed their exit to the process by the APC selected its candidates for the September 22 governorship election in the state.

Ahead of the general elections, the APC leadership promised to continue with efforts aimed at reconciling members with genuine grievances.

Earlier at today’s NEC meeting, President Muhammadu Buhari asked the APC leaders in attendance to ensure that the decisions reached at the meeting were in the interest of the party.

He also urged the party’s leadership to comply with the Electoral Act and the APC’s Constitution while conducting primaries for the general elections.

The President stressed the need for free, fair and credible primaries, noting that the wave of defection in the party recently was not enough to upset the APC.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and APC national leader, Bola Tinubu, as well as governors and other party chieftains, attended the meeting.

Coca-Cola To Buy Coffee Chain Costa For £3.9bn

by
Coca-Cola is to buy Costa coffee from leisure group Whitbread in a deal that values the UK high-street chain at £3.9bn including debt.

James Quincey, Coca-Cola president and chief executive said that Costa would give the company, “new capabilities and expertise in coffee and our system can create opportunities to grow the Costa brand worldwide”.

“Hot beverages is one of the few remaining segments of the total beverage landscape where Coca-Cola does not have a global brand. Costa gives us access to this market through a strong coffee platform.”

Whitbread had previously announced it would spin off Costa from the rest of its business, which is focused on the faster-growing Premier Inn hotel brand, after coming under pressure from activist investors.

A “significant majority” of the net cash proceeds of around £3.8bn from the deal will be returned to shareholders, Whitbread said.

Detroit Tribute Concert Celebrates Aretha Franklin

by
A spectacular concert celebrating the life and extraordinary career of Aretha Franklin brought thousands of joyful fans to their feet in Detroit Thursday, honouring the “Queen of Soul” on the eve of her funeral.

More than 40 artists took to the stage at what was billed “A People’s Tribute to the Queen,” powering through some of her greatest hits two weeks after her death in her Michigan hometown.

The US music icon, beloved by millions around the world, died of cancer on August 16, closing the curtain on a glittering six-decade career that made her one of America’s most celebrated artists.

The concert spanned the R&B, Gospel, Jazz and Blues, even classical genres in which Franklin excelled. Her grandchildren spoke briefly, delivering heartfelt thanks on behalf of their family and grandmother.

She influenced generations of female singers from the late Whitney Houston to Beyonce, with unforgettable hits including “Respect” (1967), “Natural Woman” (1968) and “I Say a Little Prayer” (1968).

“The concert is wonderful. I mean for people that couldn’t be here you just don’t know what you’re missing,” said Tembley Reynolds, 60, a medical records clerk from Saginaw, Michigan. “Everyone was great!”

Free tickets were snapped up within minutes of being made available online at the 5,000-seat, waterfront outdoor Chene Park Amphitheatre, where Franklin herself had performed. ‘Fit for a queen’

Dancing, excitedly taking selfies and filming parts of the concert on their cell phones, the evening was a chance for Detroit to celebrate the life and legacy of a towering figure regarded as local royalty.

Performances included Franklin’s hits “Freeway of Love” — an anthem to the Motor City — and “Say A Little Prayer,” with an all-cast rendition of “Respect” scheduled to bring the house down in the finale.

Her signature song, the feminist anthem became a rallying cry as African-Americans rose up nationwide in the 1960s to fight peacefully for racial equality.

Headliners included The Four Tops, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Angie Stone, while a gospel choir took everyone to church, rousing the crowd to their feet with an electric, upbeat performance of classics and a powerful rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Tasha Page-Lockhart.

Tenor Rod Dixon even sang “Nessun Dorma” in a tribute to Franklin’s last-minute performance of the Puccini aria when Luciano Pavarotti called in sick at the last minute at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

The concert followed three days of public viewings of her open, golden casket that drew thousands — at her father’s New Bethel Baptist Church, and the Charles H. Wright Museum for African-American History.

On Thursday, she lay resplendent in the church dressed in a rose gold outfit and matching Christian Louboutin stilettos. On Tuesday, she wore a red dress with matching heels and on Wednesday she was in blue.
‘Truly missed’

“I wanted to come here in the jubilance, the joyousness, the celebration of Aretha and her legacy,” said Dorlena Orange, 68. “We’re like a party. It’s like a beautiful, wonderful thing.”

The New Bethel Baptist Church held a special place in Franklin’s heart. It was there that she hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for parishioners and the needy, and also recorded an album.

On Friday, former president Bill Clinton and Smokey Robinson are among those due to address her six-hour, invitation-only funeral with musical tributes coming from Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande.

“I think it’s going to be a very upbeat service. I think it’s going to be a very jubilant service,” said Bishop Charles Ellis, pastor at the Greater Grace Temple where the funeral is being held.

Franklin won 18 Grammy awards and was feted for her civil rights work, raising money for the cause and uplifting activists with her anthems.

The daughter of a prominent Baptist preacher and civil rights activist, Franklin sang at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as the inaugurations of presidents Clinton and Barack Obama.

She was awarded America’s highest civilian honour by George W. Bush in 2005. Letters from Bush and Obama are expected to be read at the funeral.

Trump Calls Mueller Probe ‘Illegal’

by
President Donald Trump on Thursday said the Russia collusion investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller is “illegal” as the probe continues to hone in on his inner circle.

Trump told Bloomberg News in an interview that Mueller’s appointment last year to investigate his 2016 election campaign for possible collusion with Russia was wrong.

“I view it differently. I view it as an illegal investigation,” he told Bloomberg.

He cited unnamed “great scholars” who say that “there should never have been a special counsel,” according to the news agency.

Some legal experts have questioned the Justice Department’s naming of Mueller, a former FBI director, to handle the probe in the absence of a specific law governing special prosecutors.

But Trump’s own Justice Department says it is legal.

Earlier this month Andrew Miller, a one-time aide to former Trump political consultant Roger Stone, challenged the legality of Mueller’s appointment in appeals court.

Miller is battling a subpoena to testify on Stone in front of a Mueller-commissioned grand jury.

Miller’s case, supported by the conservative legal group the National Legal and Policy Center, argues that Mueller’s appointment on May 17, 2017, violated the constitution because it was done by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and not by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

In fact, Sessions, who served on Trump’s election campaign, had already recused himself from the Russia investigation, leaving Rosenstein empowered to act as the attorney general in the case.

Meanwhile, a legal challenge to Mueller’s broad mandate to chase down any lead, even if only obliquely related to Russia collusion, has also been rejected in court.

Updates Saraki Declares For Presidency

by
Senate President Bukola Saraki has declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2019 general elections.

He made the declaration on Thursday while delivering a keynote address at a dialogue for youths and young aspirants in Abuja.

The Senate President listed several challenges which he believes have clogged the wheels of progress in the nation.

He highlighted extreme poverty, hunger, lack of education and mass unemployment as some of the things that have paved way for more crime and insecurity in the nation, adding that it is now time for Nigerians to rebuild the nation with new leadership.

Also, he stated that the economy is broken while the nation has now, more than ever, witnessed division along regional, religious and ethnic lines, a situation he believes should be addressed urgently in order for the nation to grow.

He said, “ It is with all these in mind and taking account of the challenges that I have outlined, that I have decided to answer the call of teeming youth who have asked me to run for President.

“Accordingly, I hereby announce my intention to run for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the coming General Elections in 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I do so with the firm conviction that I have what it takes to secure inclusive growth for Nigeria and Nigerians.”

According to the Senate President, inclusion in all aspects of the country’s affairs is a central pillar for his plans for the nation.

He said, “Every citizen has the inalienable right to feel a sense of belonging, no matter their background or creed, or what part of the country they come from. No matter who you voted for or what your convictions are, government must work for you.”

Saraki’s declaration comes nearly a month after he defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defection sparked various reactions from both the ruling party and the opposition and subsequently, calls for his resignation as the Senate President, heightened.

Resign Or Be Impeached

According to the National Chairman of the APC, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, he (Saraki) is now a member of the minority in the Senate and should no longer lead.

He, therefore, asked Saraki to resign or stand the risk of being impeached “legally and democratically.”

Saraki on the other hand, responded, saying he would not lose sleep over any impeachment plot.

He also stated that those calling for his impeachment were only engaging in cheap blackmail.

Meanwhile, in the weeks following his defection, the Senate President has visited past leaders such as former military leader, Ibrahim Babangida, in Minna, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and most recently, Goodluck Jonathan.

Oshiomhole’s Impeachment Plan Is Mere “Wishful Thinking” – Saraki

by
Senate President Bukola Saraki has said that the position of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, that he should be impeached is merely wishful thinking.
A statement signed by his Special Assistant, Yusuf Olaniyonu, on Friday, said the APC will continue to dream about their plan to impeach him as they need 73 senators to lawfully remove him.

“The position of Oshiomhole and his cohorts in the APC that the Senate President must resign is a mere wishful thinking.

“They will continue to dream about their planned removal of the Senate President. They will need 73 Senators to lawfully remove Dr Saraki and they will never get that in the present eight Senate,” Olaniyonu said.

Furthermore, he said the argument of the APC that the Senate President must come from a majority party, that the Senate presidency is their crown and that the National Assembly is their palace, is only supported by ignorance and dangerous delusion.

He explained that Section 50 (1) (a) of the constitution is clear that any Senator can be elected as Senate President.

Olaniyonu also stated that it was hypocritical to think that the same APC had jubilated when Honourable Aminu Tambuwal retained his position after he defected from the PDP, even when his new party was in the minority.

He, however, maintained that the issue of which party is in the majority will only be resolved when the Senate resumes.

According to Olaniyonu, the fair distribution of the Committee chairmanship is one of the stabilizing factors in the 8th Senate and has helped it in achieving more than all its predecessors.

He, therefore, stated that all efforts by the APC chairman to impeach the Senate President will remain an exercise in futility.

“We hereby assure this garrulous, tactless and reckless APC chairman that a million of Adams Oshiomhole cannot remove Saraki as Senate President.

“His illegal plots can only feed his insatiable ego and keep him awake at nights. But it will remain an exercise in futility,” the statement read in part.

Freezing Benue Account Unconstitutional – NGF

by
Chairman of Nigeria’s Governors Forum, NGF, and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari has said that freezing accounts of Benue State government by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was an attempt to shut down the state.

Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Abubakar YariGovernor Yari also described the action of EFCC as unconstitutional, and wrong, especially as the state was still battling with security challenges.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, Yari said the federal government should not allow security agencies to become lawless.

According to him, “The freezing of any account of the state government, whether Benue or anywhere is unconstitutional and is not right. That is shutting down government. Government must spend, most especially Benue that is facing insecurity challenges.

“Well, we don’t know why the EFCC took the action. But if indeed EFFC freezed the account, from my point of view, it is wrong.

“This government will not sit down and oversee unlawful operation from the security agencies. From what happened yesterday (Tuesday, Daura sack), everyone can understand that government is following due process and the laws of Nigeria.

“For one to just send security agencies to shut down the National Assembly, and the action that followed, that is what gave credit to this government by local and international community.

“Similar thing had happened in 2011 and 2014 respectively, but nothing was done about it, this time around, government said enough is enough. But the government of Muhammadu Buhari is following due process and will never oversee an unlawful activity by any security agency. So in the case of Benue, I believe something must be done.”

Angelina Jolie Accuses Brad Pitt Of Not Paying Enough Child Support

by
Angelina Jolie has accused Brad Pitt of failing to support their kids financially amid the couple’s long-running divorce.
Attorneys for the 43-year-old actress alleged on Tuesday that the 54-year-old actor hasn’t paid ‘meaningful’ child support for 18 months, according to court documents seen by DailyMail.com.‘As of present, [Pitt] has paid no meaningful child support since separation,’ Jolie’s attorney, Samantha Bley DeJean wrote.

‘Given the informal arrangements around the payment of the children’s expenses have not been regularly sustained by [Pitt] for over a year and a half, [Jolie] intends to file an RFO for the establishment of a retroactive child support order,’ the filing says.
The actress-turned-director alleged her third husband has not been meeting his financial obligations and has demanded the court force him to pay up.

She has asked the judge to arrange a meeting to discuss the issue.Pitt’s team are yet to formally respond.

A Pitt source familiar with the situation hinted to Dailymail.com that the actor would likely fight the allegations, commenting: ‘Brad always fulfills his commitments’.

Later on in the day a spokesperson for Angelina explained to People why the star had requested child support to ‘provide closure to the marriage in a way that clears a path toward the next stage of their lives and allows her and Brad to recommit as devoted co-parents to their children.’

Jolie’s net worth has been estimated at $160 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth and in 2014, she was ranked 74th highest-earning celebrity by Forbes. The same site puts Pitt’s net worth at $240million.

It’s been nearly two years since their shocking split was announced. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 citing irreconcilable differences.

Unauthorised Journeys By Corps Members Remain Banned

by
As part of measures to avoid unnecessary tragic incidence, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has restated the ban on unauthorised journeys by corps members.
NYSC warned that its standing rule was being repeatedly ignored in a manner that suggested that it had abdicated its roles of ensuring the well-being as well as the welfare of the corps members.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brig-Gen. Zakari Kazaure, said on Tuesday that to travelling out of camp or places of primary assignment without obtaining permission remained an offence.

Kazaure spoke at the Ekiti State Permanent Orientation Camp, situated in Ise/Emure, in Ise/Orun local government area of Ekiti.

He was on a visit to educate corps members on dangers in playing with their health and security.

“You all have to avoid night journeys and other unnecessary journeys for that matter

” Remember that before you embark on any journey, the need arises that you first inform your immediate supervisors and obtain necessary permits

“A graduate is expected by the society to be above board. I, therefore, want you to please join hands with me to ensure that the tragic incident in Taraba is the very last of such.”

Kazaure, who arrived in the Ekiti state camp at about 4.45p.m expressed regrets over the tragic death of nine corps members in Taraba State during the weekend, describing it as a huge loss to him personally, and the nation in general.

NAN reports that the director-general who himself claimed to have undergone the NYSC mandatory programme, over 30 years ago, said the sad incident was highly regretted and called for a minute silence to honour those who lost their lives.

According to him, there is also the need for corps members to respect the culture and tradition of their host communities.

Kazaure said that any corps members were free to call his personal number on 07042542779, in cases that require immediate attention which supervisors could not handle.

He warned them, particularly the females, to avoid dressing irresponsibly and also do away sharp practices, including Internet fraud.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the new State Director, Mrs. Aniefiok Okpongete, told the director-general that a total of 1,809 Corps members were registered, comprising 1,109 males and 700 females.

However, she said that a total of 187, among them, 149 females and 38 males had been advised to leave camp on account of being either pregnant, nursing mothers or facing critical health challenges.
