Trump Under Pressure In The Face Of Confusion Over His Migration Policy

Democrat politicians visiting a migrant detention center in Texas on Saturday denounced Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, which faces the headache of separated families on the border and the influx of newcomers.
After the huge outcry sparked by an inflexible policy that in a few weeks has separated more than 2,300 children from their parents who entered the United States illegally, the government must respond to the challenge of reuniting these families.

The tenant of the White House multiplies the contradictory signals on this explosive file. Faced with criticism right in his own camp, the US president turned around and signed Wednesday a decree ending systematic separations.

The greatest confusion has since reigned over the fate of children already torn from their parents. The executive made a concrete first step by creating a specialized unit to tackle the issue.

Some 25 US congressional officials went to the McAllen Migrant Detention Center in the Texas state on the Mexican border.

"The reason I'm here is because Donald Trump has changed policies by treating families in an inhumane way," said Mike Capuano, Massachusetts representative, at a news conference.

- A "barbaric" policy -

"These people, especially the children, are traumatized, and that's part of the Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy, which I think is barbaric," said California Democrat Barbara Lee.

For his colleague from the American West, Mark Takano, there is still a lot of uncertainty about the fate of these families, including whether they will be reunited or not.

CNN, quoting officials, says 500 children have already found their parents. Officially, the authorities remain unclear on the numbers.

The US Department of Health has created Friday a "unit specializing in the reunification of unaccompanied children."

- "Specialized cell" -

According to the Politico website, this cell is entrusted to an emergency officer, a sign of the extent of the task assigned to the Office for the Relocation of Refugees.

"Minister (Alex) Azar mobilizes all the relevant resources of the Ministry (of Health) to assist in the reunification or placement of unaccompanied foreign children and adolescents with a parent or host," Politico told Politico Friday night Evelyn Stauffer, spokesperson for the ministry.

Contacted Saturday by AFP, the ministry did not immediately follow up.

Pending verifiable acts, popular pressure remained strong in the United States.

Demonstrations were scheduled for Saturday in California and 130 rallies are announced Saturday, June 30.

In Washington, a demonstration is planned that day on the Lafayette Square, in front of the White House.

- "Crisis created by his government" -
The organizers of the protest movement believe that Trump's decree does not solve "the crisis created by his government".

Donald Trump is expected Saturday in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he should talk about "trade and immigration with supporters," according to a message posted on his Twitter account.

And the US president continues to blame his political opponents: "Democrats in favor of open borders (...) just want everyone to be released in our country, no matter how dangerous they are," he said. he estimated Saturday in his weekly presidential message.

Donald Trump on Friday called on Republicans to "stop wasting time on immigration until more senators and members of the House are elected." (Republicans) in November ", in elections that will renew all seats in the House and a third of those in the Senate.

The US Navy plans to build camps on disused airbases to detain tens of thousands of additional migrants in the coming months, according to an internal document quoted Friday by Time magazine.
